You SHOULD to take action and inform IRS and state tax board, if you know that they used your SSN while filing their tax return. If not you need not worry, as they used your name and most probably some fake SSN, and if the SSN/name does not match irs will catch them, not you for filing false return.

If the first case true, you may be in trouble depending on how much they claimed in the child care expenses( it will translate to your income). IRS expects you to pay taxes.

Call the local IRS office to get instructions on filing a fraud report. You need to do this because they may have filed withholding statements that could cause you tax problems later, and you should also notify Social Security of possible fraud.

Use www.irs.gov to access the website online.

As a little bonus, should they have to pay additional taxes, you may get a small reward for turning them in. If you would ever want to use these people as a reference or if you have any sort of good relationship, you might consider telling them what you suspect and giving them the chance to make it right.

You should inform the IRS and state tax board. There's a chance they may come after you for undeclared earnings..

You can ask them not to do it and ask them to refile their papers. You can also report all the details to the IRS -- if they end up paying a penalty, you can get 1-15%, based on how much they cheated by, but that's if you don't like them.
