Excessive drinking has numerous side effects. The alcohol enters the blood stream so it affects every part of your body.
Decision making is delayed. A 26 year old alcoholic makes decisions like a teenage because he has avoided them for so long.
Liver damage.
Immune system is damaged.
Heart problems.
The list goes on.

I've heard that a life-long alcoholic lives an average of 15 years less than an "average" person, however, it can reduce life span by much less.

I'm 23 years old and after drinking heavily in college for 2 years I was a fully blown alcoholic. Last year I had an alcoholic related seizure due to withdrawal and DT's and ended up in the hospital out cold and nearly DOA. This is a good example that alcohol is an equal opportunity drug, where as no matter what age, social status, gender, or tolerance it can ruin your life and kill you in a very short amount of time if you don't drink responsibly. Even if you don't drink everyday, if you only drink heavy ocassionally, you're still considered an alcoholic if any type of practical pattern forms.

Alcohol can do a lot a horrible things to you:

1)Liver damage. Don't want that.
2) In some cases, you'll have memory loss. Like, if you drink a WHOLE lot, it can make you forgetful. Example, if you place your keys down and then get a snack, you may forget where you put the keys. So you waste 10 minutes of your life staring at the wall, trying to remember where your keys are.
3) Loss of brain cells. In other words, It can make you stupid. Or it can make you slow at comprehending things.
4)Death. Self explanitory.

Hope that helps.

Alcohol can cause a person to get cirrhosis of the liver, eventually causing them to die. They also are prone to get diabetes, and the complications from the diabetes can cause death, amputations of the limbs, high blood pressure, kidney failure, and blindness. Alcoholics also suffer from dementia because drinking kills brains cells which are not.reproduced. They can end up in the streets and homeless and become victims of crimes committed against them which also can result in their death. It is a very deplitating disease sometimes causing them to drive while intoxicated, and sometimes other people die because of their drinking and driving. It also takes a toll on marriages causing divorces, affecting the families that have to try to deal and help them.

Drinking too much and/or too often can dry you up like a prune - wrinkles(!) and skin problems - in addition to liver disease, etc.
