I am 20 years old and I've smoked since I was 17. I quit at the beginning of last summer, but I have been smoking about one cigarette a week and I can't stop. I can't get rid of the cravings.

Volunteer in the cancer ward of a hospital and vow never to touch a cigarette again. Once you personalize the ramifications, you won't get the images out of your mind.

Quitting Tips
-------------
Getting Ready to Quit

* Set a date for quitting. If possible, have a friend quit smoking with you.

* Notice when and why you smoke. Try to find the things in your daily life that you often do while smoking (such as drinking your morning cup of coffee or driving a car).

* Change your smoking routines: Keep your cigarettes in a different place. Smoke with your other hand. Don't do anything else when smoking. Think about how you feel when you smoke.

* Smoke only in certain places, such as outdoors.

* When you want a cigarette, wait a few minutes. Try to think of something to do instead of smoking; you might chew gum or drink a glass of water.

* Buy one pack of cigarettes at a time. Switch to a brand of cigarettes you don't like.

On the Day You Quit
* Get rid of all your cigarettes. Put away your ashtrays.

* Change your morning routine. When you eat breakfast, don't sit in the same place at the kitchen table. Stay busy.

* When you get the urge to smoke, do something else instead.

* Carry other things to put in your mouth, such as gum, hard candy, or a toothpick.

* Reward yourself at the end of the day for not smoking. See a movie or go out and enjoy your favorite meal.

Staying Quit
* Don't worry if you are sleepier or more short-tempered than usual; these feelings will pass.

* Try to exercise-take walks or ride a bike.

* Consider the positive things about quitting, such as how much you like yourself as a non-smoker, health benefits for you and your family, and the example you set for others around you. A positive attitude will help you through the tough times.

* When you feel tense, try to keep busy, think about ways to solve the problem, tell yourself that smoking won't make it any better, and go do something else.

* Eat regular meals. Feeling hungry is sometimes mistaken for the desire to smoke.

* Start a money jar with the money you save by not buying cigarettes.

* Let others know that you have quit smoking-most people will support you. Many of your smoking friends may want to know how you quit. It's good to talk to others about your quitting.

* If you slip and smoke, don't be discouraged. Many former smokers tried to stop several times before they finally succeeded. Quit again.

If you need more help, see your doctor.

He or she may prescribe nicotine gum or a nicotine patch to help you break your addiction to cigarettes.

Hope I helped! good luck! =)

What helped me was identifying my smoking routines and then drastically changing my habits depending on that. For example, I had to stop drinking (I'm 25 now) for at least 2 months. I had to stop driving so much, so I found ways around that by letting friends drive. When I was by myself in the car, I found some great music to sing at the top of my lungs (I know, I'm so dorky, but I just sang louder when people stared). It's easier if you have friends or family members that don't smoke, you can always tell them you are quitting and then lean on them for support. Good luck!

How can you just smoke one cigarette a week?
You must feel like **** for the entire week except for 20 minutes after you smoke that one cigarette.
Just stop.

It will take about 3 weeks for the cravings to diminish and you will get an occasional craving for about a month or two after that.

I smoked for 5 years and stopped 6 months ago- cold turkey.

It took me about 7 attempts to finally quit. Forget the patch, gum or any other BS. Will power is the only wayYou just have to want it bad enough.

Next time you go to light up ask yourself if you think your nicotine craving is more painful than chemotherapy.

I've heard great things about hypnotism being used to quit smoking. A lady I read about had smoked for twenty yrs. and after seeing a hypnotist, quit, cold turkey, though she had a three pack a day habit.

Yes you can, it's mind over matter. Chew gum and every time you think of taking a "drag" think of the poisonous gases you would be inhaling. Think of the damage to your heart as well as your lungs. Smoking causes plaque build up in the coronary arteries (arteriosclerosis) and can lead to a heart attack.

Since you're down to only one cigarette now surely you can stop altogether. It is hard but not that hard to do....

Call some hospitals. They have smoking cessation programs which I've heard are very effective.

Myself, I use the same 12 steps that Alcoholics use to stop drinking. Works.

Buy a packet of smokes and smoke one after the other until your throwing up. You should be pretty turned off them after that.

I don't know babe, I'm trying to quit drinking. It's real hard isn't it. Guess counseling, a self-help group like AA or NA, or just talking to friends and parents.
