There are many cheap, student type hostels in Paris. One that I would most recommend is Le Fauconnier or Le Fourcy. They do not require a membership unlike the International Youth Hostels. The rooms are smaller, usually 2-6 beds, or you can book a single. They have a beautiful courtyard where you have breakfast. The only drawback is the shut out period between 12-4pm. It's wonderfully safe downtown location in the 4th arrondisment which is walkable to everywhere and only a short distance to the metro.

My other favorite hotel, cheap for Paris is the Hotel de Nice, it's on rue de Rivoli in the heart of downtown. You might be able to ask for a discount when you stay for the week, if it's still the off-season. It's right across from the Hotel de Ville.
