When I was younger my Grandma always wanted sour milk if we had any, so she could make Buttermilk biscuits. Is sour milk the same as Buttermilk?
I have been reading that Buttermilk is the liquid from the process of making butter. Would it be the same if you just left your milk in the refrig. well after its expiration date?

Buttermilk that you buy now is usually milk soured on purpose with certain microorganisms. Classic buttermilk is the liquid left when all the butterfat is churned out of clabbered milk, which is basically turned milk. Milk that you just left in the fridge too long could have harmful microorganisms in it-better just but some buttermilk, or they make a powdered buttermilk that I've heard works great for baking-have not tried it.

Not really. Buttermilk comes from the churning process to make butter. It's a different consistency than sour milk. I think they can be interchanged without any problem though. To make sour milk just add vinegar or lemon.

No way - sour milk is just milk gone bad, with dead bacteria.
Buttermilk has live and active bacteria.
