I have a mixed breed Sheppard chow mix and he has been acting really weird. We let him out earlier tonight and now he DOES NOT want to stay in the house. It is 14 degrees outside and he does not respond to me when I called him to come in. He is a VERY obedient dog normally and mostly wants to be inside. Please help. THanks

I just checked his heart rate and it seems to be very fast. He is crying to get out and he never does.

If you let him out to go to the bathroom he may have a problem with urinating or passing bowl movments. He may feel like he needs to pee when he doesn't if he has a urinairy tract infection, if he is constipated he may have to go poop but simply cannot get it out. If he has worms or diareaha he may feel like he has to poop more when he really doens't need to.

I doubt it is deadly. My best suggestion would be to monitor him when he is out. Have you actually seen him pee??? Have you seen him poop??? If so get a bright light, suck it up, and go look at his poop to see if its abnormal (very hard, runny, bloody, etc.)
This could give you an indication of what could be the matter.
Give him lots of water and don't limit his access to the outdoors and when the day comes around take him/call your vet.

If you are visiting your in-laws in the mountains, my first guess would be that your dog is REALLY wanting to explore all the new and strange smells outside. There could also be a wild animal out there that he can smell or hear or in some other way sense.

This may have to wait until daylight, but if you are going to be there for a few days, make sure you spend some time with him on a leash and take him out to explore his new temporary surroundings. (Also keep him leashed because you don't know what wildlife is lurking out there, and even the most discliplined dog can take off in hot pursuit after a squirrel or rabbit or whatever.)

If this problem keeps up after you return home I would say something could be wrong with your dog's "elimination" system, perhaps a bowel blockage or urinary tract infection. Sometimes problems like that make it hard or painful or confusing for a dog when he/she has to potty. So if this keeps up when you go home, I'd take him to your vet.

But most likely, he wants to explore outside.

Has he been neutered? That would help keep him from wanting to go out. Maybe he is just too hot in the house or maybe there is a female in heat in the neighborhood. Or maybe there is a groundhog or other small animal outside that he wants to catch and gobble up.....

My dog does that sometimes too. I found it was for two reasons. Either she was constipated and kept wanting to go out, poor thing, or there was a racoon or cat in our garage. When it is cold out wild or stray animals sometimes look for places to keep warm like garages. Keep an eye on your dog when he is out there.
Hope this helps.

Perhaps there is a female nearby in heat.
That usually makes my boyfriend want to stay out.
It makes his heart beat faster too.

Or maybe you just need to clean the house a little.

maybe it is to hot in your house....even if it is 14 degrees out...it is just as bad being to hot...you might turn down your thermostat and see if that helps...or put him in a cooler part of the house....

or there could be a dog in heat near you..that will keep him out and about....

Maybe he's found something that he doesn't recognise and wants to explore it for a bit.
