You could apply styling gel on your hands and with the pull clumps of hair on your scalps upward (away from your scalp). Or you could try combing upside-down. Bow and then comb you hair the oposite way from how you usually comb it, this will give your hair more body. Use a bit of mousse on your comb while doing it to make it stay. And then comb it back, as usual.

The only way I can think of a solution even though you may not want to hear it is to get it cut. Try getting a razor/layered cut. More hair on your ends will way your hair down. It will also make your hair have more body and if you cut more off the top then it won't look shorter.

I also have long hair and have wondered this, but then I found out that models and actresses tease, backcomb, spray, and add hair to their own hair. Most of these girls you see with long hair actually don't have long hair, their short (lighter) hair makes up the body on the top, and the extensions make it look like they have long hair. This is why they dislike poparazzi so much... their hair doesn't look as good when the professionals haven't worked on it.
There is really no way to help long heavy hair look full by the scalp without causing alot of damage.

The most you can do is use an iron or perm your hair. But you should probably get a haircut or donate your hair to a cancer organization. 45" is really really really long and NEVER looks good. All that hair is going to take nutrition from your scalp for your hair when it's suppose to be used for your brain.

Use a volumizing shampoo/conditioner. Herbal Essences is a good brand to try. Models use loads of hairsprays, mousses, and gels. It takes them hours to do their hair everyday!

You're right. It's the heaviness. The most you can do is go for fullness. I wouldn't Big, Long Hair... not a good look. Instead, go for Shiney.

Get some light perm work done, you will be a lot happier with it, and easier to take care of.
