They tend to be detained during initial quarantine processing, if they are thought to have lied, when appealing an unfavourable decision (i.e. they are not considered to meet the UN definition of refugee) and in the absence of adequate identification. There has been general agreement that no children should be detained for any significant length of time but at the moment the government will still detain the parents. Much of the detention occurs away from the mainland and even in other countries like Nauru and, in the past, Papua New Guinea. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship is responsible. Please excuse some of the blleding hearts that will answer this message and making it sound like we mistreat our refugees, they are often poor misguided souls who spend to much time listening to Labor Party propoganda and not bothering to check out FACTS for themselves. If refugees arrive illegally i.e on a boat then they are placed into Detention centres so that they can be processed, they are often looked after with everything that they could desire except the freedom to roam the country, but hey that would be a hell of a lot better than the worn torn hell holes they have come from if they are legitimate refugees. If they enter australia and have applies for refugee status prior to arriving, ie from the australian aoverseas missions then they are fee to do as they please and they are truly welcomed. These guys often do things the right way. The ones that pay a fortune to people smugglers often are placed into detention while they are being priocessed. If they did things properly in the first place and used some of their hard earned money to apply for refugee status instead of paying off people smugglers then they would not have to be detained.

Has any of you that reply to this message ever been in one of these camps. They are not what they seem. The refugees are bored, cramped and are not well looked after. But yes Refugees are sent to these camps and there they must wait for their fate. Will they get sent back to their country where there is war, famine or dictatorship. or are they allowed to stay.
Before anyone says that what I have written is crap, I have a few friends who have been in these camps and I have heard first hand about some of the people are treated.

Australia has a quota that allows genuine refugees into our country you must apply for this, if you come over as an illegal immigrant you will be imprisoned until your identity and status within your country can be proved , if you are not consider a refugee you will be sent back.

They get locked up until they can prove they are legitimate refugees it has caused great debate over here whether it is right or wrong but it has stopped the boat people as they are called here from arriving in droves.I am not sure it is a good idea to lock children up though especially if they are to become our future citizens.
