I bought a Sony DC9 and I love it. It's been in use everyday for over a year. I've used it to take underwater videos, and I use magnifying glass mode all the time to zoom in on stuff you can't normally see. I don't have any experience with Nikon or Canon but I love my Sony!

I would go with Canon. They have great imagine quality and camera body overall. If you want a compact camera, Canon makes the best ones I have seen. The SD800IS or even the Sd600 are really great cameras. The SD600 is if your on a budget. My vote for compact is the Canon Sd800IS. Great imagine quality and its small and compact.

I love my Canon A530. I read everything too before I bought one. It isn't really small, which I liked cause them I would have a harder time losing it but it has way more features then I will ever use and still pretty user friendly.
