Depends on what your natural skin color was. If you're any light shade of skin tone, skin needs time depending on the individual to turn over. Skins cells in the dermis layer have to come all the way up to the surface, which could take a while. It depends on the amount of sun damage that has already been done, and how melanin-producing cells have decided to react to it. They may return to producing the amount they did before the tanning, or not. Worst case scenario is people end up with blotchy patches of light and dark skin.
I happen to be biracial. I was very pale as a boy, and got progressively darker as a teenager and adult. My case is genetic, and I can never get untanned.
Some people recommend creams and lotions, but that speeds the healing process if you get stuff that works for you. It takes time, but if you use lotion, good sunblock, and limit exposure, you'll go back to what's normal for you. The worst thing to do is use an exfoliator. That will dry you out.
Once you untan, you need to watch your sun exposure. Once damaged, the risks for skin cancer are greater.

Exfoliating will help. Only do it twice a week, though, because you don't want to damage your skin. Always moisturise afterwards. Also, don't expose the tanned area to the sun too much. If you're going out into the sun, wear sunblock.

Stay away from the sun for a while. Wear long-sleeves and a hat when you are in the sun. There are such things as whitning products/lotions but I feel that its healthier to just keep away from the sun.

You cannot get "untanned". Your skin will lose the tan over time if you stop exposing it the sun.

Either wait for it to just naturally go away or use an exfoliater. Just dont use it too often-- you dont want to turn red or start peeling or anything like that
