Serious illness and serious medication.
Please, don't ask us - call the doctor that has prescribed this for your son.
Best wishes.

Lithium is not a medication that you shouldn't just stop. It has to be gradually tapered off with your doctor's supervision. The doctor may want to replace it with another medication. Bipolar is a disorder in which you have depression and manic attacks. These can alternate or a person could have a combination of both at the same time. There is no known cause, but doctors think that it is a chemical imbalance in the brain. Taking the lithium may be the reason your son has not had any symptoms/manic attacks of bipolar. I would follow the doctor's advice or get a second opinion preferably from a psychiatrist who specializes in bipolar. Good luck and God bless.

This ? is best answered by your son's Dr.

I do know some people who are on very low doses of there med's but the Dr wants to keep them on them because that way they are still in their system. So if they get a recurrence they can increase the dose and they get better faster.

It is rare that some one can come off their med's

The main reason people with a mental illness have a relapse is they come off their med's If he is doing so well why chance he having a relapse and then having to go on a high dose again I have seen this over and over

May be the reason he is well is because of the med's some people once they are stable only need a Sm dose

Don't stop without discussing it with a doctor.
