The best thing you can do for your friend is escort her to a doctor. He/She will answer your questions. Continue your interest in infections, maybe go to school for it, but don't play doctor yet. Your friend needs medical attention -NOW.

3. How would you treat an infected tongue piercing if you cannot apply antibiotics?
ozonated water gargles 6-8 times a day
get Hydrogen Peroxide for medical use (not the industrial one)
add 3-4 drops in a (250-300 ml) glass of drinking water
gargle it regularly
it'll not only prevent even cure the current infection
best wishes...

SHE NEEDS TO GO IMMEDIATELY TO A DOCTOR !!
AND TAKE ORAL ANTIBIOTICS FOR THE INFECTION OF THE TONGUE PIERCING.
INFECTION OF ORAL PIERCING CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS.
What's wrong with oral piercings? A tongue piercing is a potential source of infection. The jewelry may damage the teeth and gums. Many people with piercings can't speak normally. The National Institute of Health found that oral piercings are a possible route of disease transfer. Swelling, bleeding, and heart disease have all been associated with oral piercings ("For the Dental Patient…" Journal of the American Dental Association, volume 132, January 2001, p.127).

Sea Salt Rinse
In addition to the oral rinse after every meal, sea salt soaks will also help heal your piercing. First, fill a fresh disposable cup with approximately 8 ounces of water and add ¼ teaspoon of sea salt, stirring until it is dissolved. Then, rinse your mouth for approximately 15 seconds. Sea salt rinses should be performed after smoking or drinking anything other than bottled water. Note: Some piercers and piercees have had much success by substituting sea salt rinses for medical-grade oral rinses.

actually no, ive been reading up on tongue piercings as i had mine done a month ago and mine healed fully but has now swollen slightly again and is a little sore, DO NOT remove it, as if there is an infection, your friends risks the piercing healing over and the infection becoming isolated inside her tongue which would mean she would probably need an operation. She needs to go back to her piercer as they get to see these problems on a daily basis or go to her GP

Well, infections can come from seveal factors and esp. when the body can't deal with it itself. If antibiotics are not acceptable for some reason, homeopathy will help. Seek a good homeopath. And sometimes the stud may be setting up an allergic reaction. Better remove it for now.

Your friend needs to gargle with some hydrogen peroxide. Any place with a piercing can get infected. You can die from an infected piercing. You need to get your friend to a doctor for some prescription antibiotics. The sooner the better.
