My 8 yo cat Maggie was fine yesterday. This morning she's acting funny. She can only seem to walk a few steps without stopping. She acts like her back legs are hurting and she cries as if in pain. She'll eat and drink but can't seem to control her bowels and keeps making messes on the floor. I've been babying her all day. I have 2 other cats but they've been leaving her alone today. Anyone have any idea what might be wrong. I called the vet but everyone is closed on sundays so I'll have to call this morning. I'm freaking out and I keep checking on her every 1/2 hour - hour. I'm afraid I'm going to find her dead.

Coorscowgirl101...ever heard that some places are closed on weekends no matter what. I live in a very small town and all the vets are closed Sundays. The vets have recordings telling you to call another vet for an emergency. I'm trying to help her the best I can til they are open in the morning. The last thing I need is for someone to leave a smart a** response...it's not helpful at all.

Looks like you have no other choice but to wait till morning when the vet is on duty. Meanwhile, why don't you gently massage the kitten's lower spine collumn - especially the spot above where her hind leg bones meet with the pelvis? Do not massage the belly region in case kitty has impacted bowels! Just massage the back spinal region and back hind quarters. Keep her warm and quiet away from the other cats. That she is eating and dinking is a good sign. Has she been dewormed? Is she long haired? Could she probably have hairball stuck in her intestinal track? So sorry that yourkitty is so sick right now... I know you won't be able to sleep well tonight. I know that if I were in a similar situation, I'd be staying up baby-sitting the cat all night till I get to the vet! Hope kitty will bounce back! Oh - don't forget to keep her hydrated becuase of the diarrhea. Give her water through a dropper or syringe squirt into the mouth is necessary.

First off I hope your kitty is still okay.
I think she needs to be seen by a Vet ASAP.
She may have had a stroke, or she my have gotten into something toxic.
If your Vet only has a message on your machine telling you to call someone else in case of emergency then it's time to find a different Vet....has this Vet no compassion??
Animals get sick on weekends too, not just during office hours!!
I live in a town of less the 6,000, there are two Vets here and both have messages on their machines, but you leave a number and they call you back.
Anyway, good luck and I hope kitty gets well soon.

Change in her diet can cause her to feel very ill. There is a possibility that she got hurt in some way. With cats anything goes, really. She might have eaten something that she shouldn't have. Renal failure is common in older cats. That is probably what the vet would look for first. They will do blood work. It could be costly. Whatever the diagnosis, remember to think of your kitty's well being first and not your love for her. One of my kitties passed some months ago and it was difficult to see him suffer. If she is relieving herself where she shouldn't it is a clear indication that there is something wrong with her. My suggestion is to go to the vet ASAP. Hope your kitty gets well soon.

Keep her separate from the other cats. it is good that she is eating. She definitely needs a vet, it could be as simple as a Urinary tract infection, or it could be more complicated. I had a cat who went into kidney failure, he was asymptomatic until the end, when he had trouble with his bowels.
Call your vet and get the phone number of the emergency vet on call,it should be on the recording. As Monday is a holiday, and since you have other pets, the emergency vet number is going to be useful anyway.
Meanwhile, keep her hydrated and warm, if she stops drinking use a medicine dropper to give her water, and put on some classical music to keep your other cats calm.

Get the cat to the vet as soon as possible.. not being able to control bowels for periods of time isn't a good sign. Also make sure you did not change her cat food with in the time the symptoms started. Pets sometimes have a hard time adapting to new foods.

it could be a sign of a heart murmur..i give my cats a drop of lecithin ( gel tabs- poke a hole in it ) twice a week. my cat almost died after doing what yours did. my cat got to where she couldn't walk at all and the vet said she had a heart murmur and she had a blood colt. they didn't hold any hope for her. that was last year and i have had no problems and no side effects since then..i hope this helps you

Sorry to hear this. Sounds like your kitty has been hurt (sudden change in her habits).
Keep her comfy and warm, leave her be and the get her to a vet a.s.a.p.
Good luck.
