I just posted Pregnant dog and got some mean answers First off my dog is purebreed Irish Red and White Setter, second, we want her to get pregnant. "Echo" is a theraputic dog for my epileptic brother. He is also slightly autistic. My brother has an obsession with dogs, he knows all breeds and all their details. Echo being pregnant would be such a wonderful experience for him. Of course we would keep the puppies!!!! Why would you people assume we would just give them up.Geeesh.. some people need to learn to answer the question , not pass jugdment. BTW, we also have 9 other animals all fixed and saved from the shelter!!

Check with the vet first, because if Echo is a therapy dog you may not be prepared for her reaction on having pups.
A females hormones change from about the third day after giving birth and a previously loving dog may start to act in defence of her pups. It is impossible to predict beforehand which dogs will go through this.
Breeders are prepared for it, but pet owners can be shocked when their female threatens them if they go near the pups. They can become extremely aggressive. It lasts while the pups are small and helpless.
Plus during the late stages of her pregnancy and while the pups are young she won't be able to work predicting your brothers fits, which could be dangerous for him.

Have you thought of offering a short term foster home to a dog shelter, they could loan you a female and your brother could benefit from the experience but without the risk of losing confidence in his dog.

If you can manage all of them and make your brother feel better then all the best for you. Please make sure you get all those dogs spayed or neutered. What will happen to those dogs if one day you can no longer take care of them?

You should ignore the negative answers and focus on the good ones. When it comes to dogs people can be very mean. There are way too many dogs in the shelters and being euthanized every day for someone to post that they want to breed their dog just because they can even if it is to make your autistic brother feel good. Is there any other thing that will make your brother feel good other than bringing more dogs into this world? It's just a thought.

Sorry, but you are being naive. Firstly, your b1tch is too young to breed from. Second, have you been in touch with the breeder of your girl? Irish Red & Whites are classed as a Vulnerable Native breed, if you are going to breed from her, you should do it properly & use a well bred male of the same breed. Thirdly. you are not seriously suggesting you that you could keep all the puppies from the litter are you? It's not uncommon for Setters to have 10 pups in one litter. Finally, it is not likely to be a wonderful experience for your brother. Whelping is messy, exhausting & stressful for all concerned. Your b1tch or the puppies or both could even die.
By the way - before EVER breeding from a Red & White, your girl should have been tested for Hip Displasia & CLAD. Has she been?

Well lets see.... You have 9 pets already, and you want to breed your dog, and keep the puppies? That's a lot of animals to take care of, and seeing how your brother is autistic, you already have your hands full. Why would you want to add more to your plate when its already full? I think its great that you want so many animals, but lets be reasonable. You already have your hands full, and want to add who knows how many puppies to the mix? How could you possibly have the time to care for all of your pets? I'm not knocking you, as your intentions are good, but you may find that taking care of the puppies will be too much. Do you realize how much work is involved in taking care of your dog and her puppies? And is having puppies just for the sake of giving your brother a "wonderful experience" really a good thing? Like I said , you have good intentions, but I think you should really stop and think about what your considering.

I wont ***** at you like a few of the people from the other topic, but do you really think this is a good idea? You already have 9 pets and do you really think you could afford anymore? What if one of the puppies becomes sick and gets the other puppies sick too, can you afford the vet bills? Can you afford a good quality food and collars/dog licenses for them all?

I'm going to leave this up to you, because if you honestly think you can handle it then go for it!! Nobody here can tell you what to do, though I would suggest thinking about it.

AWWW I'm glad you saved animals from the animal shelter, anyway i'm not that kind of person that would be rude or mean to a person i don't no so don't worry i wouldn't do that to anyone. Now i'm not getting your question! so i'm really not sure what to say,but just take it to the vet like you did the last time your dog was pregnant and GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

Not a good enough reason to breed a dog, sorry. So you are going to keep the puppies are you? You do realise that Setters are VERY prolific, and have been known to have in excess of 14 puppies at one time!.....................GOOD LUCK!!

Best of everything to you and your family. I understand your needs and wants for your brother. I hope all works out for you, Echo and your brother.
Suggestion: After this litter is born, consider "fixing" all BUT ONE of the pups. This way if Echo leaves this world before anyone is prepared, you will have an option to breed the one and will not have to worry about inbreeding between the "Littermates" The concern of inbreeding is unhealthy dogs. It would be unfair to the dogs. Yes, there is a possibility she is P.G.; so take her to the Vet ASAP and find out.
Now, WOW ~ to those whom feel the need to tell you its hard caring for pets and family.
Some people think you need to be told what it entails to take care of your brother.
These individuals surely don’t understand the degrees of Autism or Epilepsy nor do they know what you deal with or don’t deal with. Moreover, how can anyone begin to think they need to suggest to you the cost of taking care of pets!
NONE of these answers has to do with your original question.
There is an Old saying "Walk a mile in my shoes".
IF a person does not know you, he nor she should assume the degree of your ability to care for pets or the depths of your pocket book. Nor does he or she know what kind of pets you may have or acreage of land to care for "what ever" variety of pets you might have. Echo may very well have more than a couple pups....you never said how many you wanted to keep and if you'd keep all of them....even it were 9 or 14. So far be it from anyone to guess and be a smart-a../butt with any snide comments. If you are an adopter, you probably have a good idea how to get those pups adopted that you might not choose to keep. And you more than likely know how important that is.
The question was only to find out IF anyone might know if your dog is pregnant.
I could see if this has happened more than once one might want to give you some advice of not putting your dog outside when in Heat. That is it.
Our family has had many pets and still do. We are knowledgeable because of our studies of various animals big & small. We are VERY responsible pet owners and take better care of ours than most people take. We have spent more money than anyone we know for the care of our pets; for a variety of reasons. We have given pets to children in need theraputically. It is our choice to have these pets, to save pets, or to take pets that others must give up because they are being sent to war. What of the flip side? Has anyone heard the story regarding a Marine bringing a pet home from War?
DID he think of the responsibility it would take and how many rules were being broken for a mere puppy? YES! His choice.
We have many a tale to tell of our Zoo.
Our male Choc. Lab whom was to breed. Another, while visiting grandparents’ farm for a week, impregnated the female he had a date with. The owners didn’t notice she was in heat as she ran free on the property.....Ugh for us!
A second Breeding we chose NOT to follow through.
We were told the prior litter by this other female Lab had the worst case of Hip Dysplaysia. We realized this was not a good match. We did not know if it was the male or the female of her first litter that had the gene, which causes this unfortunate health issue. When my husband had to go to war our Lab jumped the fence once and was brought home by the Sheriff. She informed us our Lab was in the yard of a female Pointer in heat.
The officer also recommended, to the other family, a female dog while in heat should be kenneled or in a crate indoors.
The smell of a dog in heat can reach a male dog miles away.
Having a Female dog outside invites male dogs into the back yard. Yes, it’s true miles away…that does not always include the wind blowing.
We brought a new puppy into the house and at her 6-month birthday, our adult male Lab realized this Great Dane Puppy was a “Girl”. Not wanting to breed “LabraDanes” or “Great Dane-a-Dors”; they are both fixed.
The Great Dane breed does not live long and we would love to hold on to our Girl for much longer than 7 years or so… a puppy of hers would be wonderful. She is the first puppy my children will ever remember having and they love her so very much!
I have to peal the kids off her everyday as they cant love her enough. But we made a decision. Spaying and Neutering can be a hard decision to make. My Brother in Law, an Aesthetician to humans, lost his retriever during it's operation.....because of the anesthesia. He had to Spay his new pet a year later and it was gutt wrenching for him, waiting to see if all went well. It is a good decision to make when all is said and done.
IF all you want, are puppies and to know if your dog could be pregnant, take her to a Vet.
Don’t take anything on these web pages too seriously. Most people have no idea how to give positive encouragment.
Thanks for saving those other animals you have in your family!
Congratulations “just in case”
GOOD LUCK to you, Echo, and your Brother.

I think it great what you do for your brother and saving the other animals from the shelter. Don't let smartass remarks make you lose 5 points and post another question...just and in details to your exsisting question.
I hope you get the answer you need.
