Same crap used to happen to me. It started when I began getting drunk at around 14 and each time I'd get wasted and end up a crying mess. I had a few good years in there around my late teens and early 20s where I stopped with the crying and was able to control my emotions but by then I was drinking almost everyday. I quit drinking every day when I was around 23 and I went back to "binge" drinking every month or so but each time it was worse and worse. I'd get a little depressed that night but I'd wake up the next day wanting to kill myself and feeling that there was no reason to live anymore. I wasn't exactly hungover, just suicidal. I'd be severely depressed for about 4 or 5 days and it was getting harder and harder to recover from it. I kept drinking thinking that the next time it might be fun and I'd be a 'happy drunk' but it was so rare that I basically gave up trying.
I also suffer from severe clinical depression and anxiety/panic attacks. I had a full blown mental breakdown in July and didn't get on the proper meds until November. I shouldn't drink on the medication anyway so it made sense for me to quit altogether. I ended up having to start going to AA because I do NOT react well to alcohol, yet once I start drinking I can't stop until I'm blacked out. The most annoying part about it was that I always felt like getting drunk when I was the most depressed because I had that stupid idea that it would cheer me up. It always made everything worse. I'm 28 now and I'm finally realizing that I'm an alcoholic and I'm also finally dealing with my depression without 'self medicating'. The last thing a depressed person needs is alcohol!

Basically, the alcohol as they say is a depressant. In your case, since you already have a depression problem (whether chemical imbalance or psychological) the alcohol only intesifies the depression. I do not recommend drinking if you have major depression as you have stated as it may very well cause very dangerous and possibly life-threatening behavior to you or to others. If you must drink lay off a bit. Don't drink so much as to get drunk, drink enough for the buzz and stop.

Because Alcohol is a depressant. You won't get so depressed if you don't get so wasted. Either that or you might not have a lot of seritonin in your brain and that is the chemical that causes happiness. You might not be producing enough of it to keep you happy.

I am a bartender and I have a favorite quote that describes your situation (and many others) perfectly. IN VINO VERITAS. Basically, this is Latin for - in wine there is truth. It means that alcohol does not make you into anything, rather it reveal who you really are. I would suggest not drinking until you can rectify your depression issue.

obviously you are not what they call "A Good Drinker" you may be on medication that does not agree with alchol and I would strongly recommend you simply do not drink.
Surprising but people do not mind if you don't drink in fact they are usually glad of a driver, and if you tell them why they are usually very proud of you.
good luck

try to hold your high at the happy level by slowing down, eating etc. If you can't, you're being told you don't need to be drinking, you're a ticking time bomb.
