If these temp internet files were manually deleted by mistake, could I recover some or all of them if I realised my mistake later on.
Would they be overwritten by newly saved files if left deleted for a period of time before their restoration. Assume the cache to be small at about 500Mb on a 60Gb disc.
If the cache is deleted every two days is there any chance of recovering ealier deleted cache files.

Most temporary internet files in XP are stored at C/documents and settings/ local service/local settings/temporary internet files.

If you delete them they will be replaced the next time you visit the site. Deleting them usually only causes the page to load slower the next time you load the page. Deleting then also removes a lot of clutter form your hard drive. Firefox can be set up to delete them each time you close Firefox.

Hard Drives put things in order when possible. But, as we delete things it leave open spaces, which that where the Hard Drive will put something when it come to it. IF, the empty space not hold everything, then it move to the next empty space to finish the install. This what Defrag all about, it try to keep everything in order and packed toward the beginning and not leave empty spaces. This as easy as I can explain, but, most times stuff is all over the place, unless a person Defrag every time they Install/Delete something. AND, even then, a few things get scattered around.
So, odds are, things that are deleted may get overwritten rather quickly.

there are many ways to try and recover files deleted on your harddrive- try a free program called Avira unerase personal. here's some info
Thank you very much for choosing Avira Unerase. You decided to use the most powerful unerase solution that is currently available. Avira Unerase recovers deleted files from your NTFS4, NTFS5, FAT, and FAT32 volumes. Files that have emptied from your Recycle Bin, as well as files that may have bypassed the Recycle Bin because they were deleted via a DOS application, lost with a removed directory, deleted by a networked application or an uninstall process, etc.
