We all get into the habit of negative thinking, but there are different ways of avoiding it,
My Suggestions:
- Go for a walk, I know it's an effort but, it makes you feel good.
- Read a book, you cant think about negative things when you are reading.
- Invest in a puzzel book, its fun and it keeps your mind off things.
- Join your local sports team, basketball, netball, ect...
- Ring a friend.
- This is my favorite for negative thinking, Invest in a positive affirmation book, it will help you to think towards a positive future and trust me with enough practice it really does work...
Good luck, i wish you all the best...

I have the same problem, I'm constantly jingling locked doors and squeezing faucets that are already turned off for a few minutes. That's slight obsessive-compulsive behavior, probably not identical to what you have, but somewhat the same.
Lately I've started to overcome this problem by using logic, telling myself "this is silly, I'm freaking myself out. I've tried my best with the resources that I have and I am not going to waste my life worrying about things that are beyond my control. This is not a fair or healthy way of thinking, so I am going to move on now."
I also find that doing exercise or laying down to rest for a few minutes helps me a lot. It might help you too.

You sound just like my daughter. We tried the medication route, but found out that doctors are really only guessing which drug will work for you. Recently, we have had success with using more natural methods - - - one of them being essential oils. Maybe if you have a spa in your local area you can talk to them about possibly using essential oils and which ones have a calming affect. Maybe use them in a diffuser in your room or in your house. Also, my daughter has recently done an Aqua Detox and believe it or not, it has been 15 days since she had an episode of any kind. For her, that's REALLY good. (Aqua Detox is just a special foot bath done in some of the spas)

When you think negatively become aware of it and think about an ideal vacation or place you would like to be. It forces your mind to lose focus on the negative and it will stop the negativeness in its tracks. If that doesn't work then see a phycologist. Even celebrities and athletes deal go to shrinks to improve mental stability.

The answers saying Luvox and Fluoxetine are on the right track. You can also get involved in an intensely concentrating activity like chess . I am sure you know from experience reading a good book, or any book, does not help. See your family Dr. or a psychiatrist to get on a med. That is the only answer until your life situation changes or you outgrow it, and it happens.

I would suggest a wonderful book to read that helped me alot. "the Power of Positive Thinking" by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. I was very depressed at the time and it really lifted my spirits. I hope this helps you. Also, I would suggest taking a walk, and doing things you enjoy when you start to feel negative thoughts coming on. Also, being with other people is good, too. Ask them about themself. It takes your thoughts away from you and focuses on them.. Good luck.

Actually this sounds like a generalized anxiety disorder GAD.
I know, I have been through this. I couldn't sleep because my mind would just go over and over things. God, it was frustrating !
See a doctor, there are many meds for this.
Before meds, I tried meditation (but my mind kept going back to what it wanted me to hear ! I tried relaxation tapes, tried to visualize a clear blue sea, etc. etc. etc. Unfortunately, nothing worked for me. I would get so anxious that it eventually led to panic !
Please go see a doctor.
Good Luck.

Medication, my dear! Lots of good ones out there that have been made public in the last 10 or so years, designed to fight obsessive-compulsive disorder (I've used Luvox for almost 10 years).
Find out if you might have OCD below. If so, see your doctor or call a psychiatrist for an evaluation. It's really no big deal anymore!

If you can catch yourself from "obsessive thinking" try this. Picture in your mind about a blue ball in a grassy field. The ball doesn't talk, move or bounce in the field. It just sits there. Before you know it your not thinking about things over and over. Your just thinking about the blue ball sitting in the field. Good luck.

exercise....yoga and meditation all help.....print off some affirmations off the internet and read them morning and night...or 20 times a day if you need to to put some positive back in to your life....see a docotor medication might give you a little boost and quieten the negative thoughts but you still need to do the work yourself ...its like breaking a bad habit it takes time and patience...sometimes when my mind goes in to over drive i just say stop...and go and do something....i know it sounds silly but i also hummm and listen to that....that way i cant think the negative thoughts....your mind just needs a rest
