double standards?

Last night I heard a story about an american literature teacher who made the fallowing requirements for her class: must read the quaran, must wright a paper as if on a pilgramage to mecca, must build a model of a mosque, and must wright a paper as if in the middle of a jihad. What surprised me first was that this was in an AMERICAN lit class and second that no one cared. If a teacher required their students to read the bible build a model church and wright a papper on a major christian figure, student rights activist and the ACLU would be all over it, but not for a teacher teacind islam. why is this doble standard allowed in america?

I'm not sure where the origional article came from, but where I heard it was on the final hour of rusty humphries Saturday Night America on Feb. 17.

Because liberals hate Christianity. Liberals run the ACLU, the NEA, and they dont mind anything that bothers Christians.

This was not a class about religion, it was a class about literature. There is a difference. The bible can be studied as literature as well, with no interference from ACLU groups, as can the Book of Mormon, etc. Building a model mosque isn't such a weird idea, as many people have never been in one and this is a good way to give an indication of what the building is like, how the congregation conducts itself, and gain some insight into the culture. And literature depends upon culture.
Any reason why you can't be bothered to spell check your question? fallowing, wright, pilgramage, papper, doble -- it undermines your credibility when you make such silly errors.

first of all, its "write," not "wright." Perhaps you could use a few more english classes yourself.

second of all, do you have a reference? I would like to hear the whole story before making a judgment. Do you know if she had done the same for other religions, perhaps having the students learn about the literature of different world religions? Was it a college class? Was it done with the intention not of converting children to Islam, but of fostering understanding of the second largest religion in the world? A religion which more americans should know about, considering how greatly it is misunderstood and how important it is in current affairs?

Third of all, i don't think there would be a big outcry. In fact I know first hand there wouldn't be. In (public) high school I did have an english class taught by a Christian teacher, and we did study the bible (and the bible was the only religious book). we had to buy our own bibles (if not already owned) and read parts. The reason why you don't hear big outcries about AMERICAN english classes using the bible is because it happens so much, not because it doesn't happen at all. Now if we used the bible with no fuss in my english class, but the use of the Quran in that english class is sparking online discussions and outrage, then it does seem like a double standard, but not the double standard you think.

the ACLU might not be stopping this because no student or parent called them to complain. If no one complains about an assignment on Christianity, then the ACLU wouldn't try to stop it either.

I doubt students would read the entire Qura'n, it's a big book and a long read, just like the Bible. Unless this is a whole semester project. But for a literature class, the students should be reading from many different holy books and doing a comparision paper or such.

"I heard a story" is what bothers me the most. Give me details so I can check out all the facts and I'll be as upset as you. There is a great deal of difference between a public elementary school and a private college with many incremental steps between.

Your "story" doesn't go into any relevancy's that aren't propitious to stirring a Christian pot of persecution crying.

Many teachers require their students to write papers/do projects on cultures other than American/European so that they can get a little more perspective on the rest of the world. When students study other cultures and learn more about them, it is harder for them to hate outright. Education and learning are the enemies of hatred and intolerance.
I went to and graduated from a christian university. My junior year we were required to do a project on a non-american/european civilization. I think it was a great learning experience.

They are studying Islam from an Academic perspective, reading the Qu'ran as literature, and learning about Islamic culture.
