I'd like to construct some mini manipulator robot prototypes. Small as a milk box or so, made from nylamid or wood, but I'd like the control to be very precise. Not necessarily using servos, but I don't know where to get cheap-controlable motors

They have a good bunch of small, inexpensive steppers. You can run the steppers open-loop, and still get good positioning. I used an L297/298 stepper controller/driver for my milling machine, and it works pretty good. Build the reference schematic for that, then you just send a step pulse to control the speed and a direction line to go forward or back. Steppers are a good choice if you need somethign that holds in place when it isn't moving, and doesn't use a leadscrew.

I'm not sure how inexpensive these motors might be but look at MicroMo Electronics Inc. at www.micromo.com
