Dogs can be used as guard dogs. Police Dogs. I certainly feel safer having my rottweiler at home. My Poodle and my cocker spaniel bark if they hear someone come to the door. My dogs don't shed as much as my cats do. My cats tend to spray around the house and my dogs have been trained to go potty outside. While there is nothing that can be done other than allergy medication for a person that is allergic to cats someone who is allergic to dogs can get a non shedding dog and possibly avoid allergy medicines. Dogs can get trained in obedience and can be trained not to chew on personal items. Cats have a natural sense to scratch and unless you have the cat declawed, which I think is inhumane, you will find a bunch of ripped furniture. I love cats and dogs all the same and it's hard to pick one over the other but I certainly couldn't replace the security I feel having my dogs around with a cat.

I hope this helps.

Good Luck.

I have a dog and a cat - cats tend to speak to and play with you when they want to - where as my dog is always up for playing or cuddles - i dont know if my two are normal (doubting it cos there is no way my dog is in any way normal lol)

A dog protects their owner whereas a cat would sit lazily by and watch - also dogs are a way of getting some exercise and cats arent - dogs are welcoming if you have been out without them but cats just look up and then go back to sleep

like i say i dont know if this is normal but thats what my babies are like

good luck with your essay

As I like both dogs and cats, I'd find your essay quite hard to do. I'd suggest that you concentrate on comparing & look for reasons that link to where dogs are, in general, different from cats ... though there are exceptions but that's by the by.

I found this list of 'things that you can learn from your dog' a while back & it may help to give you some ideas of dog's good points:

"Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride.
Allow the experience of fresh air &
the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
When it's in your best interest, practice obedience.
Let others know when they've invaded your territory.
Take naps & stretch before rising.
Run, romp & play daily.
Eat with gusto & enthusiasm.
Be Loyal.
Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent,
sit close by & nuzzle them gently.
Thrive on attention & let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On hot days, drink lots of water & lay under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around & wag your entire body.
When you're bored, place your nose on the back of a human's knee.
No matter how often you're scolded,
don't buy into the guilt thing & pout...
run right back & make friends.
Bond with your pack.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. "

And also this thing - got to be tongue in cheek - must be (lol) about why dogs are better than women!

Why Dogs Are Better Than Women

Dogs don't cry.
Dogs love it when your friends come over.
Dogs don't care if you use their shampoo.
Dogs think you sing great.
A dog's time in the bathroom is confined to a quick drink.
Dogs don't expect you to call when you are running late.
The later you are, the more excited dogs are to see you.

Dogs don't mind if you give their offspring away.

Anyone can get a good looking dog.
If a dog is gorgeous, other dogs don't hate it.

A dog's disposition stays the same all month long.
Dogs never need to examine the relationship.
A dog's parents never visit.
Dogs love long car trips.
Dogs understand that instincts are better than asking for directions.
Dogs understand that all animals smaller than dogs were made to be hunted.
Dogs like beer.
Dogs don't hate their bodies.
No dog ever put on 100 pounds after reaching adulthood.

It's legal to keep a dog chained up at your house.
Dogs don't worry about germs.
Dogs don't want to know about every other dog you ever had.
Dogs like to do their snooping outside as opposed to in your wallet, desk and the back
of your sock drawer.
Dogs don't let magazine articles guide their lives.
Dogs would rather have you buy them a hamburger dinner than a lobster one.
You never have to wait for a dog. They're ready to go 24 hours a day.
Dogs have no use for flowers, cards, or jewelry.
Dogs don't borrow your shirts.
Dogs never want foot rubs.
Dogs enjoy heavy petting in public.
Dogs find you amusing when you're drunk.
Dogs can't talk.
Dogs aren't catty.
Dogs seldom outlive you.

Well at least it might make you laugh before getting back to that excellent essay that you're going to write.

Good luck

This is going to sound almost stupid because it so simple... Get on the phone to your local animal control agency (The Pound), and ask them about cats that cause problems, they will tell you pretty quickly that cats are considered to be WILD ANIMALS. This is true in almost all jurisdictions. I know of no place where the 'domestic cat' is not considered under the law to a wild creature.

Dogs are symbiotic with humans, we share chores and duties and the like to mutual benefit. This makes dogs not only helpers, but friends and companions. Dogs have contributed to humankind in so many ways it is hard to count them, tending our herds, carrying loads, helping us hunt game, and the list could go on forever. A dog will defend you with its own life.

Cats on the other hand are our friends only when it suits them, and over centuries of existence have never been beneficial to humans beyond this. Basically, a cat could care less about the humans around it as long it has its needs met it is happy. AS far as being a pet, the good thing with cats is that they are pretty independent and don't require much from people.

For better or for worse, dogs are pack animals and fit a niche in a family. This was never so obvious as when I was visiting a neighbor and watching a movie. He had to leave for work, so it was just me, his wife and his daughter. The dog stood over his daughter, on the chair, practically covering her until I left. My neighbor jokes that he's the "alpha male" but it really isn't a joke. He's the only one the dog consistently and immediately obeys.

I think that dogs make better pets because they rely on their owners for everything, whereas cats tend to be quite self sufficient, they can live outdoors all of the time if they so wish, I know my cat had many owners, because she would get fed from lots of people.
dogs on the other hand like to stay within the home and be petted, fed, and generally made a fuss of.
cats are very independant and will do what they want.

Dogs respond to you. If you put in the effort of training and playing with and caring for them , then they more than repay you with loyalty and affection. You can have a really close relationship with a dog My collie can tell how I'm feeling and behave accordingly. If I'm down he'll stay close and listen patiently to all my moans, if I want some fun he's always ready to play, he takes me out for walks and introduces me to new friends, he makes me laugh and he always looks pleased to see me! What more could you wish for?
Cats are more aloof and independent. They are employers not friends.

there is not greater valuable puppy, only the main appropriate puppy for somebody. somebody who has much less time and no inclination to stroll for miles daily or do extensive training would be greater valuable with a cat. somebody lively who has the time and desires to coach an animal would be greater valuable with a canine. i'm greater of a canine individual yet that does no longer mean canines are greater valuable pets, only that they tournament me greater valuable.

personal taste I would say. Dogs take alot more attention, so if it is companionship, committment, training and walks you seek then go for it. Cats are characters in their own right, but more aloof, independant and appear to need us less, although they still need company
