I worked in a library and today a chinese man came in and said he had never had the books that brought fines in his card. I tried to explain to him about how that fine went up and he did not believe in that. He said he was not in the country that time and wanted to show me the passport(which he has not brought in with him). I tried to tell him that maybe his card was used by someone else. He did not believe in what I said but paid it anyway. The thing is when i tried to explain to him in his language he first pretended that he did not understand what I said, so I kindof suspected him of lying. Then I told him there was a book on his card that has not returned and should be returned today. He then talked loud and imtimidated me. He said he had return it into the slot just 10 minutes ago. I had a look and could not find the book that he returned. I could not trust this guy but he was making a fuss and many people were watching.

I did not back off and finally the boss said I should waive the fines of that man and did a claims returned of the book that he cliaimed was lost when returned. Do you think I have done anything wrong not to back off ? Because I have a strong feelings that he was telling lies, and the boss did not want him to stay there talking loudly....what should I do in the future if I see him again. Personally, I think he is a real bastard...

ahh..the pleasure of working with the public....hundreds of great people..but all it takes is one ******...

I would like to say that it is ok not to back down...and most of the time it is fine...but......one experience I had many years ago..taught me that maybe backing down isn't such a bad thing ..which I did......I damn near got my head blown off...thank god the idiot's friend grab his arm at the last minute or I probably wouldn't be on this board tonight....true story.....

I retired from public employment that night....I will shovel ______ out of barns for a living ...before I will ever work in the public again......

The fact he was/is Chinese is irrelevant, isn't it? If he'd been white American would you have pointed that out? Or simply just said 'a man...'?

Anyway, you likely did what you thought was best in the situation.

I need to know if you speak English as a first language.

If so...you need tutelage.

If not, not bad.

Either way, he was boisterous and arrogant. Two terrible qualities. Usually associated with people having self-esteem issues.

I think.

why did you have to include race? I feel that is kind of racist, but just follow whatever policy your boss has for you, and keep your pride out of it if you want to succeed.
