You may be referring to a branch of artificial intelligence in which the existing knowledge of human experts is collected and programmed so that a computer, faced with a situation, will respond as the human would that had the knowledge. It is probably about the only part of artificial intelligence that is actually used and it is seldom referred to as such (scares people, I guess) but it is a simple concept. It is often used these days for the "help desk" function of high tech companies. They figure that all problems have happened by now, all solutions are known, and if you can just describe your problem to the computer, it can find the right answer. Cheaper even than offshoring.
