I have a small area in the backyard to work with, it gets morning and afternoon sun but I live along the coast. I would like one that doesn't get too big. Thanks!

Acer palmatum--Japanese Maple in general is as follows.

Hardiness Zones: 5 to 8
Height: 20 ft Spread: 20 ft Form: rounded
Type: deciduous shrub or small tree
Annual Growth Rate: less than 12 inches

Most of your question involves differences in varieties of the Japanese Maple. A few are listed here. Mostly it will be a matter of personal choice as which you would like to grow. I think that one of the Japanese Maples will be the tree that will suit your needs.

'Garnet' - A spreading plant with large,
garnet-colored leaves.
'Flavescens' - The weeping tree has cut
leaves that turn yellow to orange in the fall. The
tree will be 6 feet tall and 8 feet wide.
'Burgundy Lace' - A small, low-branched, spreading tree
with red, deeply-divided leaves that have serrated
edges. The fall color is red.
The variety "Red Dragon" is another Japanese Maple. It is a smaller tree, lace leaves, and a deep purple-red color.

Red maple (Acer rubrum) is also known as scarlet maple, swamp maple, soft maple, Carolina red maple, Drummond red maple, and water maple. This tree grows fairly fast and can get very large. I have a Red Maple in my yard and I think that you should avoid this tree. It breaks up with high winds losing large limbs. Also it is a very prolific tree. You will get literally hundreds of seedlings sprouting each year.

Is it getting water. that could be the issue. I had one and this was before 2000 and sadly it got a disease and died. It was 40 years plus and grew great, but disease and end of tree.
