Hot tea with honey.

P.S: Don't listen to Gary P. Anything acidic will make it worse.

Warm salt water is a temporary fix, it does help and salt naturally kills some types of bacteria that cause sore throats and infection. Chloraseptic,is not a good idea...if you tell your doctor you use it they will tell you not to. Here's why..having a sore throat is your body's natural defense mechanism telling you something is wrong, if you continually numb your throat you are covering up a symptom that could eventually evolve into something very serious..particularly Strep Throat..many people do not know or realize that Strep Throat left untreated can evolve into SCARLET FEVER. This can cause irreversible heart damage and even death. For temporary relief of sore throat good old fashioned Listerine mouth wash gargled 3 times a day can do the trick...also a hot tea with honey and lemon will soothe your throat..but your best plan of action is to go to your family doctor..your sore throat could be Strep Throat. Go to a different doctor no sore throat should last 8 days something else could be wrong..did they do a blood test? Just a respiratory infection? Respiratory infections are a serious matter, did they give you any antibiotics?

RE:
my throat really hurts when i swallow. are there any common foods/drinks that can temporarily soothe my throat

Just about any liquid that temporarily coats your throat will help, and the action of swallowing itself helps. The salt water will really help, and it's easy to use. My mom would always fix me tomato soup when I was sick, and that still seems to help a lot, although I think it is more comforting than healing. I've found that peppermint candies, or Lifesavers, work almost as well as cough drops if you're congested. When you go to bed, take a bottle of water with a little sugar or tea added to it. The added tea, or sugar, seems to change the feel of the water and make it easier to swallow than plain water. It would probably work with lemon and honey, too. Hope you feel better soon.

Slow sipping some sprite makes my throat feel better most times. Garling salt water does help. Just don't swallow. And of course you could always try some not so nasty tasting throat drops. Ludens cherry drops taste more like life savers than medicine.

Try something warm to see if that helps....if not, try something cold....suck on chips of ice. I have found that the same thing does not alway work each time.

You should be able to find something that at least temporarily soothes the pain. If not you may have strep and will need to see a doctor.

You can gargle with salt water, but if you can get to a drug store you can get stuff to spray into your throat like Chloraseptic stuff and pick up some Zinc Lozenges for the next time, As soon as you think you get a sore throat suck on one, it really helps.

My husband told me once about a "natural" remedy to get rid of sore throats--it doesn't taste very good, but I've tried it and it works wonders!
Try gargling a capful of Apple Cider Vinegar (mixed with a tad bit of water). Just make sure not to swallow it! :)
Blessings on your health--I hope you feel better soon.

I either sip warm chamomille tea, or pop. Sprite and 7-Up are what I usually go for. The fizz in the pop has a soothing effect on my throat.

Oh, as per my own experience, before, all I had to do was to drink straight half a bottle of COKE and all the itchiness disappered. But then, since I since the Soprano 1, as an alternative solutions are drinking pure citruis juices after dinner, then go to bed early. But somtimes, all I could do was to eat ice cream. I don't know if they will be effective to you, too.
Well, you simply try them :)
