The concept of 7 deadly sins originated in literature, I believe that it was Dante Alighieri's "The Divine Comedy." About the same time I believe that Pope ??? gave a speech listing similar sins--perhaps this is where it became a church listing.

There are an innumerable amount of sins, there are no specific list of seven stated in the Bible as deadly. As the Bible implies that any unconfessed sin is deadly. (Therefore, on sin is no better or worse than another.)

We had a sermon on the 7 Deadly Sins a long time ago at Youth Group.
A group of church leaders got together and discussed what they thought were the worst sins and they came up with Gluttony, Greed, Lust, Pride, Envy,Wrath, and Sloth.

They are really God's words because they were created by the Church! That is what is amazing about the Church. Christ said that death would not prevail against His Church (Mt. 16:18). If we truly believe that then we would have no trouble believing that the seven deadly sins declared by the Church (as well as numerous saints and theologians) were true.

They were created by desert monks and nuns.

The desert delling monks and nuns faced temptation constaintly and they listed 8 vices as the sources of sin. Pope Geogory the Great modified this list for the Seven Deadly Sins we know today.

The were certainly identified by men (and women), but these were rightous men trying to be as in touch as they could with what God desired for them. The Seven Deadly Sins are not so much sins in themselves, but the source of sins.

Good question...

I believe they were man's words. (I'm Atheist. There, I said it.) The sins just seem so made up by the ruling class and the church (Back then they were one in the same.) to keep the rubes in line. Don't eat so much. (...so the king can.) Quit making babies. (It strains the economic systems.) Don't be lazy. (Work harder for your country and king.) Don't want better things. (You might just find out how much better it is in another country and move.) Don't hate others. (Especially your tyrant ruler.) Don't like yourself too much. (...it might make you think you're better than the king.) Don't keep everything to yourself. (You need to pay the king's taxes...always the taxes...)

It kinda makes sense when you look at it that way. I honestly believe that thing really haven't changed at all since then either. That's just me though. Good luck with the essay.

first let me say, ALL sins are deadly.

second, I have never run into a "7 deadly sins" list in the Bible.

It is God's word although they are not listed in the bible as the seven deadly sins, but i have read the bible and they are all in there. Looking at them I see that they are things that God doesn't like.

I am a Christian/Protestant--I def. believe they were God's words. I guess this is a personal question. Do you believe in the Bible? If you do than this should be an easy answer. Just getting in depth might be a little more difficult-Good luck:)

well personally it would be easy to write on the topic because you cant be wrong, its your opinion. Luxuria ( lust), Gula (gluttony), Avaritia (greed), Acedia (sloth), Ira (wrath), Invidia (envy), and Superbia (pride), are the seven sins. you can find a lot online on different peoples beliefs, i believe that they were instituted by the church to instill morals in people.
