It use to be an all year round thing as a discipline and sacrifice. Catholics (or at least roman catholics) may eat fish because it is not considered meat. My understanding is that it is perfectly fine to abstain from something else although the fish and no meat thing is traditional. Fish has long been a symbol of Christianity because Jesus picked a bunch of fisherman to be his disciples and make them "fishers of men" and fish was cheep food back in the day and was the humble meal over fancy meat. This however isn't really the case anymore so the practice doesn't make as much sense as it used to. The reason why you can do something else is because the idea of disciplining yourself is still there. Many people can't participate as they have certain dietary needs that must be met however fasting is required on friday because this is a reminder of the day of the week Christ died on the cross. Fasting is the important part the eating meat thing is debatable.

Absolutely. Jesus did a 40 day fast- it's the least I can do after what he did for me. BTW the Orthodox abstain all of Lent. Try doing that!

No. I never did that when I celebrated Lent when I was younger. The church I was raised in said it was moot as that was a Catholic practice and we were not Catholic.
Besides, fish is still meat. It may not be red meat but it still comes from a living creature.

I don't know if the rule has changed or not, but I know that on Good Friday you must abstain. You'll have to check with your priest or minister to be sure.

Yes, I am Roman Catholic and according to Canon law this is required. However, it is also in spirit of penance that I sacrifice during Lent.
