I primaraly use my Desktop as a gaming platform and my laptop for all the other things. It's my understanding that Windows Vista is a real resource HOG. This would tell me that I REALLY should not bother with an "upgrade" on the desktop, and since resources are limited enough on a laptop I should avoid it there too. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Sir, forget the crap! VISTA is a better Operating System than XP, just as XP is a better OS than WIN 95.

The system does more and requires more, if it did not, then Microsoft has learned nothing these past 4/5 years.

The first DOS system came on 3 floppy disk, the last versions came on 13.

You can not take an old DOS machine and run WIN XP!

Almost any computer, under two years of age will run VISTA! Issues are, graphic card, RAM - at least 1GB, 2 is much better.

If your machine is WIN 98 or older, don't bother!

VISTA is not a hog. It has a lot of support programs running and they require RAM also.

If it did not have any more going than XP, why buy it?

One thing is certain, written in stone, VISTA is the PC Operating System. Just like XP and all the WINDOWS before, less than one year from now, only VISTA will be on all NEW PC. Less than three years more of industry will be upgrading to VISTA.

Like all other systems, Microsofr will not support XP forever! Just as single core CPU is dead so is XP!

Yes, it takes a stronger computer to run it, but then, we do not put a new GM motor in a 1955 body!

Should you upgrade? No! do it when you buy/build your next machine. Most home users should not UPGRADE! They should wait until the change their system and then VISTA will already be installed on their computer!

The only reason to change operating systems now is that you are buying a new or upgrading your old computer! That upgrade will include CPU and graphic card, along with power supply.

It "hogs" more resources, but it also puts them to use. Even though 512MB is the minimum amount of RAM, 1GB is really still on the small side. 2GB should be your starting point. Also, a dual-core processor is must-have too.

If either your laptop or desktop has most of that, then Vista could be an option. However, you will find the new OS a bit cumbersome after growing used to XP. It takes a while to find settings here and there, and all that time adds up. So if you don't have a lot of patience, Vista will drive you nutz.

With that said, its potential is tremendous. Eveyone said the same kind of thing when XP first came out (having their doubts when comparing it to 2000).

Vista. some people say Vista makes use of up a lot equipment ram. it is actual. Vista makes use of those ram to % up the computer. Thats why there is not any longer a lot free ram. Xp wastes those free ram doing no longer some thing. Vista is even more beneficial properly perfect than XP than u imagine it is. Vista hasn't any issue to me for a million 3 hundred and sixty 5 days already. Vista is swifter at the same time as commencing software and starting up the computer. some people evaluate XP because they are too used to XP or they are gamer. it type of feels vista is slower in video games through 2-5 fps. No large deal. VISTa!

Yes, indeed it is a memory hog. Unless you already have at least 1GB of RAM installed in your computer, or have the capacity to install more. Laptops do have the capacity, just check with your manufacturer first, but, you might want to also check out the expense involved just as well.

Since you are a serious gamer, the Vista O/S is PERFECT for you, but, you really should get the most computer for your money and the most RAM that you can afford and the system can max out as possible. I would advise you to make a new purchase for a laptop rather than an upgrade if you purchased yours more than three years ago. I would also advise you to wait until at least another six months as Microsoft still needs to fix more bugs, bruises, kinks, and kicks out of Vista before buying.

Laptop prices are getting cheaper and they are getting more powerful as time goes on.

My suggestions:
#1 Apple MacBook #1 In Computers (IMHO!!)
& In Technical Support (Consumer Reports)http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=A4791B5D&nclm=MacBook

#2 Dell

After you make your purchase of your new laptop, you can sell the one you have now on eBay or Craigs' List after wiping it clean of your personal files first or keep it as a backup.

It does have quite a bit of overhead. Also if you are dl files and running programs it will drive you insane with permissions to do most any task. If you don't need the extra enhancements to multimedia programs and if you are happy with XP, I find no reason to upgrade.

You would be correct in your understanding. Unless you have a specific need to upgrade to Vista, I would avoid it.
