Is helicopter flying my ambition in life?

Question

I just thought of doing this maybe a week or two ago. I've always loved helicopters, Longbow, Hughes 500 etc.

I'm probably going to get a job shipping/receiving, for some helicopter shop on a small airport near the rich side of mesa.

Go to college at MCC for my bachelors in Aeronautical Science, join the Army as a Warrant Officer. Go threw 2-3 years of tests, BCT, and Flight School. Then perhaps be an airline pilot or something.

However, some times I don't just dwell over it. Does this mean that this isn't my ambition in my lifetime? Do I have to dwell over it, and think of it at least everyday? Maybe I just got excited for the moment? I mean I love helicopters, not thinking about that, but chasing after the ambitions is different. Maybe I think that it would be to hard of a goal? I know I can do it. But for some reason the other half, the quiet half, doesn't want to speak up..

it really seems like you love helicopters, therefore they would logically make a good career choice, however i get the feeling thats not the reason you love helicopters? hhhmmmm. not for a career.

it sounds like youve loved helicopters for a while so i dont think it was a spur of the moment thing to think of a career with it, but a conclusion.

however, maybe you need to research it all more, find out what its really like before you do it.

its entirely possible that the quiet half knows something that you need to figure out for yourself,

Maybe yes, maybe no. It sounds from your write-up that you are relatively young, probably in your late 'teens. Flying professionally (whether helicopters or fixed-wing) is a laudable ambition, and will take a lot of drive and tenacity to accomplish, but it can be done. Keep researching the field, get yourself in a position to take some instruction, and keep an open mind. You say you've only considered this for about a week, you need a bit more time to determine your life plane (BTW, whatever you plane, you will find that there are lots of unanticipated turns and forks in the road throughout your life path). Hang out at your nearby general aviation (not airline hub) airport and get to know some of the people in aviation. Based on a couple of clues, I'm guessing you are in Mesa, Arizona. If so, Falcon Field has a large and diverse group of people based there, with a lot of experimental and warbird activity, some civilian helicopter ops, and, of course, the Boeing (formerly McDonnell-Douglas, previously Hughes) helicopter plant on the north side at which they manufacture the Apache. There are several FBOs there, and The Roost (an airport restaurant there) is a popular gathering place. You may also want to look into the EAA (Experimental Aviation Association) chapter based at Scottsdale Airport - search for EAA Thunderbird Field Chapter in Google or at www.eaa.org - lots of people from all over the Valley. Also, you might want to check out opportunities with the Arizona Army National Guard Aviation Company based at 52nd Street and McDowell in Phoenix - might be a more assured way of getting into Army flight school. I completely get where you're coming from. My lifelong ambition was to fly fighters. However, I also enjoyed my physics, history and computer science classes as an undergrad.
I gave consideration to pressing on that path.
Keep in mind, you CAN do other stuff while you're flying. Pursue a Master's, tutor (military folks are in high demand, as we usually have experience living overseas etc). I've done all that, and was a battlefield tour guide part-time while stationed in Germany.
It's ok not to be, nor would anyone want to fly with you, if you were totally obsessed with aviation. It's all about "the whole person concept":.
Stick with it, you'll realize the endgame is well worth it.

i am gonna offer the simplest answer out of anyone here: go with your dream. if it is your dream to become a helicopter pilot go with it. try not to let anyone else tell you what to do.
