NO one would enjoy "eating sand". This may be a local troop expression which implies defeated or dead insurgents continue to be replaced by a seemingly endless line of new ones .

I'm thinking it's like if you tried to eat a sandwich on the beach. There is sand on their uniforms, sand is blown into their hair, etc, so it probably ends up in whatever they eat. And no, I'm not trying to be funny. Think about it.

Take a trip to Death valley Ca. Walk a mile through that dessert. Then you can ask that question, that is if you can talk. No one in battle likes sand in their noses, mouths, ears, and other places.

I believe you mean United Statesian troops. America has over 900 million people of those less than 300 million are United Statesians, it is hardly fair to blame American troops due to the actions of a minority of United Statesians.

Wow, you're as obtuse as anybody I've ever seen. Eating sand is a euphemism for generally being a grunt. It's not something the enemy makes you do, it's an aspect of the job of being a soldier.
For someone who claims to be educated, you don't know much.

Yes, instead of IED's, they now come up to us, give us wedgies and throw sand at us. Its becoming a very friendly rivalry between us, but we always take it too far and blow them away. You waste so much time my friend.

Although it is nutritious sand isn't the most pleasant thing to eat. Most eat it for the health benefits.
