i want to get a tattoo, Im thinking of getting it in a rich vibrant blue, however i worry it will fade too much over time and turn pale and boring. Should i get it in black instead to compensate?

-- i don't tan, but i still worry about it none the less.

I have blue in the first one I got and it still looks really good. If you go in the sun put sunblock on it.

Tanning is not the only reason tattoos fade. Tattoos will fade naturally over time ever if they are never exposed to any light or UV sources due to the natural way your skin replenishes itself and the body attempting to remove foreign objects from itself. There are steps you can perform to minimize the fading affects of time and sun, a good sunblock with an SPF of at least 15 when ever there will be any exposure to UV sources is one of the best ways to keep your new ink looking new longer. Also, anything that causes the skin to slough off faster, excessive washing, rubbing, scratching, etc, will also accelerate the fading.

The Modern inks are designed to last longer then the ones our grandparents were inked with. Lighter and brighter colors will noticeably seem to fade faster then darker colors, a neon blue will be a duller shade in 5 years time then when first applied while a deep blue will appear to be closer to it's original shade in the same time period. But above all else talk to your artist on how to maintain the color best since ink varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Aftercare is key to fading, even after its healed you need to take gd care of it. While healing it make sure you use a good product. (tattoo goo, vaseline, bacitracin, neosporin etc etc is JUNK do not use them), Light unscented lotion, ie cocoa butter, curel, etc works fine. A&D is a little bit risky because certain kinds contain a zinc oxide that will oxidize your colours as they heal and therefore fade them quicker. Prep H works fine for larger pieces.

Tanning is almost irrelevant, even if you're simply oging fishing and you dont put sun block on it every 2 /3 hours you will still cause damage to your tattoo. Make sure you always use a good quality sunblock (at least spf 35) every 2/3 hours and keep reapplying.

Also your tattoo may simply need retouchign after a few years because your body tries naturally to break down any substances in it, in this case your ink, causing the image to blur out a little.

Besides that make sure you go to a good reputable studio with good quality artist who know ahat theyre oing. Good shops use good inks. A bad artist can give you a bad quality tattoo and that will also affect its longevity.

A black tattoo can fade just as easily as a blue one. Aftercare lasts as long as your tattoo, ie a lifetime.

All tattoos will fade some in time. The best tattoos always have a good monochrome drawing as their base. That way, as the colors fade, you still have a good looking black/white image which can always be recolored by any competent tattoo artist.

you can ALWAYS get a touch up. but first and foremost, you won't need to get it touched up for years and years if you take care of it.

1. after care (moisturize, wash, keep out of sun, etc...)
2. daily care (sun screen, no tanning, etc....)

do that and maybe you'll never need a touch up. who knows, i know a 60 year old guy who got tats when he was 30-35 and they still look AMAZING, because of how he cared for them. and plus, if you don't take care of your tattoos, a faded black tattoo can look just as bad as a faded blue tattoo...trust me, i've seen it all.

Choose a good artist. They can
help you decide on color and other
important decisions concerning your
tattoo. Such as placement and care.
Always think before you ink.

After care lasts forever. If you keep lotion on it at least once a day, it should retain color for a long time.
