My fiance did this before he proposed to me. he had already bought my ring and had it like a month, and i knew he had, he wanted to ask my dad but he was really scared...i was 17, he is 24,(now im 18) but anyway, my dad really liked him, hes a great guy, but i think this is a good idea and very respectful, and this will make your girl's dad realize that you care about his feelings too, and when you ask, you should mention that you love his daughter very much, and you will treat her well, and that you would appreciate it if he would give you his permission to marry his daughter (this leaves a way out if he says no, which hopefully will not happen!) Then my fiance proposed like a week later on the beach... it wasnt really a surprise, i knew he had the ring, my dad's permission, and all that, and that whole day, we went to the movies and out to eat and then to the beach, he was so nervous. he kept checkin were he'd hid the ring in the car, everytime we got in or out, and when we got to the beach it started to rain, i felt so bad for him b/c he was so nervous... but anyways good luck!

Very good idea...good luck and stay calm. My husband did the same and it turned out perfect. Maybe include the mom. Also I am sure they like you but make sure that you have a plan...where you are gonna live, how are you gonna supportt her, and the famous If you ever hurt my daughter! The more you are prepared for the worst the better you will be. Dont worry you will be just fine. Congrats!

Do you have a pretty good relationship with the father?
If you two haven't really talked before, springing that up on him might freak him out.
Since I've never proposed though, I can't give you much advice on the conversation with daddy.

do something dramatic so you'll always remember it. trust me!
my boss put the ring in his pocket and filled the box with rox. they were on his boat and he 'accidentally' dropped the box in the water when he got down on one knee.
so do something you'll both remember.
