none of the above
the main purpose is to come back to the present moment and surrender our worries.
it works like this, u go to a temple u will be drawn up by the sounding of the bell, the sacred chants, the bhajans etc. all these get u in the present moment, making u leave all the things u keep on thinking abt the past or things which u r anxious abt inthe future.

Your existence has made your mind to accumulate memories, some of which cannot be deleted.

To bring your mind to focus - The consious and sub-consious mind will be filled up with thoughts which have to be temporarily removed so that your encounter with GOD is one to one without any distraction.

This is the purpose of visiting a temple, where all the activities you see around would make you to focus your thoughts.

Is this a multiple choice? Do you mean in the Old Testament, or now in 2007? My purpose of going to the temple (church) is to continue growing in my relationship with God and to fellowship with other Christians.

The Hare Krishna Temples are made with the purpose to give the chance to people to hear about God. Because nobody knows God, except them.

it depends upon indiviidual what is his purpose of going to temple as you have got the free will.
real purpose of going to temple is to love the God as Bhakti yog says. you should feel the love of the God it is for the ideal bhakt.

but for some people it should be like to understand that the God has given everything to us freely and a free will is given to do anything why the God has given to us . that itself created love for the God. hence we should go to temple and we should worship him as you are loving him.

third kind of people if they are in problem than they should convey their problem to the God and surrender to the God . that they are in problem because they have done some mistake so now please help me God and i will not repeat the same please give me one chance to prove myself that i am not sinner but it was happened because of kubudhi. then see the God's leela

if there are fourth kind of people who have some other desire to fullfill then temple is not the right place for them ie they are in duality.
so i think that the purpose should be clear then only he can concentrate in the temple for the God.
