I don't want answers like "cuz its dead". I've heard about bodies sitting up and how they need to be strapped down, but I want to know why it does that.

DEAD BODIES DO NOT SIT UP! EVER!! THAT IS AN OLD URBAN MYTH AND IS UNTRUE AND RIDICULOUS!! I have embalmed thousands of bodies, and I can state with absolute assurance that they do not sit up. EVER!

It truly humors me that I get a thumbs down for being CORRECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bodies do NOT sit up and they do not need to be strapped down. I don't know where you have heard this but I have NEVER seen a dead body do this and I have been working in nursing homes for 33 years and no dead bodies have ever moved or sat up.

As Regan states dead bodies dont SIT UP.......... They SET UP. What your probably hearing is a mixed up story from some nosey person listening to a couple of Embalmers talking.

To set up is when the tissue becomes firm after the embalming.

When the organs shut down, the muscles can spasm a bit, making the body move and look like it is alive.

Also, as rigor mortis sets in, body parts can settle, and as it decomposes, it collapses (if you want to consider that movement).

The biggest factor that plays in is rigormortis. This is a stiffening of the muscles when the body starts to break down. During this time if the body is in the fetal posistion it could appear that the body sat up.

I know that gas sometimes builds up and the corpse will "sigh" to release it. My grandpa told me a story about how some of the reflexes and electric signals still go off sometimes-causing movement.

They don't ready "sit up". Bodies, still have active reflexes. Just like when you have spent all day walking around and lay down to sleep @ night, your body still sorta jerks. It's the same thing. It's just the body's way of relaxing & tightening.

Certain nerves of a human dead body are not entirely shut down, that is why it does that, but most of the human body is
dead. This should answer your question baby.

Build up of gas or the contraction of tissue, such as when a body is being cremated, can cause movement and often the body to sit.
