It's a reaction to the pushiness of many Christians.
Honestly, I'm not trying to start a fight here. The reason I became agnostic was because I disliked the Christians I encountered. They were pushy, rude, and insistent that I converted.
So, I reacted back.

First of all, if you want to learn more about another person's beliefs or thoughts you should avoid using words such as:
hypocritical,
ethnocentric,
predictable
and selfish.
Stereotyping only limits your scope to learn and puts you in a tiny box. Try listening to different thoughts and opinions. You dont have to accept them, just acknowledge them. And that human beings are a geniusly molded creation that none are identical physically nor psychologically.
There will always be differences, the only way to live in peace is by respecting and understanding them.

Surprise surprise. I've been doing research on R&S for a year. Atheists don't preach. We have no desire to convert anyone; we are very happy, thank you. However, we respond, (as anyone would), to the insults hurled at us. The majority are civil, but as in any of these categories, the vagrant fool slips in now & then. To be constantly told we are evil, sinners, going to burn in hell & so on (are these not Christian concepts? Hmm), is really laughable in a way. NONSENSE, blackpara, talk about preaching! I've scolled pages & pages & pages of scripture from the bible. What is that called? As for mantle two--as an Atheist, I suspect there was such a man as Jesus, but I don't "believe" in any sense that he was the "son of god." To the asker--I'm not critcal of your dyslexia, only your ATTITUDE & it's not very congenial tonight. (I put that as nicely as I could, since I don't want to "wound" you, as you commented in another question.) I will wisely stay far, far away from you. You are bad Karma.

Well, I aim my questions at Christians because they are them most prominent religion in the US. Plus, I don't know enough about any other religion to be able to speak against it. I don't debabte about things I don't know about. Anyway, we are ethnocentric because we believe in applying logic and reason to our beliefs rather than false hope.
About your fear of death comment, Christians are just as afraid of death as atheist/agnostics. Example: Why do Christians fight off cancer/accidents with extreme measures when they could just die and go to the lovely heaven they believe in?
If heaven is so great and surely exist, then why are so many Christians scared to die and upset when a loved one dies?

>>And fear of death is natural and self preserving; fear of ideas and thoughts is pathetic.<<
True. My sense of it is, though, that fears of ideas and thoughts are usually on the part the deists. Fear is a big player in religion, is it not? As you point out, fear of death is a real attention getter. It's just that I'm not in the market for snake oil.

What exactly are you asking? Sounds like you are the one preaching. I'm an atheist but I don't go around trying to change anyone's mind about their belief system. When I encounter someone who wants me to "accept Jesus into my heart", I simply say thanks but I have my beliefs and you can have yours. I don't get hostile or give them a lecture on evolution, I just ~cough~ turn the other cheek...

Atheists promote their beliefs for the same reasons that religious do: they consider that such beliefs are beneficial to anyone who has them. The atheists make a better case for it.

The atheists aren't the ones who are afraid of ideas.
I bet you could do a test and you'd see the atheists were the ones familiar with ideas.
Its ok to fear death, but its not ok to fall prey to silly superstitions because you so badly need to feel you'll survive your own death. To me that even sounds like a contradiction but then religious people don't pay much attention to reality.

Obviously, you're foreign.
Atheists don't preach, we only defend our beliefs from the christians who do preach.
Most atheists DO believe in christ, but not in the sense that we believe in God.
Let us atheists believe what we want to.
It's the "holier than thou" christians who need th anti converting speech.
CHRIST WAS A SELFISH, LAZY, MAGICIAN WHO PREYED ON THOSE WHO BELIEVED IN HIM.IT FINALLY CAUGHT UP WITH HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
