Yes they basically are the same. Some varieties are a little different but all are potatoes and different places call them yams or sweet potatoes.

Sweet potatoes are a root vegetable, native to North America. Yams are a tuber, not a root, and various types of yams are native to most areas of the world.
In culinary terms, sweet potatoes can be substituted for some types of yams.
The confusion is a marketing ploy begun decades ago at the insistence of farmers in Louisiana, who insisted on having their sweet potatoes called Louisiana yams. The state portion of the name was pretty much dropped at some point along the way.

no,yams is a vine which grows on a tree the fruit is black looks like a pony dropping,the meat inside is white and when fried or cooked tastes exactly like a potatoe.
sweet potatoe grows on the ground also like a vine but it does nor climb ,it has a red skin and when cooked is more like pumpkin than potatoe

no. they are totally different. both are tubers but yams are single plants whereas sweet potatoes are creepers with may tubers. both are eaten boiled, mashed . with sugar and butter. Yummy!
