I walk my small dogs 2 or more miles a day and we pass lots of dogs every day. So I'd like to know which ones to beware of.

THis is also for the dog park because 2 of my dgs were attacked for no reason by a pit bull a few months ago. I want to have my mace ready for any other dangerous dogs.

The top 5 dangerous dogs (most likely to cause an unprovoked bite):
1. Chihuahuas
2. Miniature Pinchers
3. Miniature Poodles
4. Dachshunds
5. Cocker Spaniels

Any dog can be dangerous, but 95% of the dog bites that I have seen have been by small/medium sized dog breeds. The other 5% of the bites were by large dogs, but they were totally provoked (one of the dogs was a Husky that bite a person who was trying to rob the dogs owner). I have been bitten by all of the dogs listed above and a Lab, and I have never been bitten by any of the notorious breeds that are always in the media.

There truly are no dangerous dog breeds. The problem with some dogs is their owner. If you do not get a dog into obedience, and teach them that you are in control and not them, then they can become dangerous. There are breeds of dog however, that are bred for reasons that may not fit your lifestyle and could cause a problem. Take pit bulls for instance, they (if trained) can be great family dogs. But the problem with a pit bull is that they were bred for bull baiting and fighting. Their genetic make up suggests that they will have a short compact very muscular body and a jaw that "lock" when they bite down so that they could hang on to the bull they were fighting. This does not mean that your pit will be a man eater, this just means that they were bred for a purpose and that should be taken into consideration before you take on this breed. That is true with all dogs, they were all created for a specific reason, and that could determine whether or not they are right for you. With firm training, and good exposure, any breed of dog will be great in any home and will not be a danger to you or others.

I hate this question, you always get the same stupid answers and the same stupid debate! How many people here actually looked up facts? Not the people that said Dobermans! Dobie's only account for 3% of fatal bites, just the same as a St. Benard, Great Dane or Chow Chow. Those are dogs you would consider family pets aren't they? Just to let you know, small dogs bite more often, and for no provoked reason. Small dogs are often let off the leash to run around free and will chase you up the road to guard it's territory, which they usually claim as the whole block, so I hope you run fast. They might not kill you but they hurt like a b****. Big dogs are hardly ever let to run free around the neighborhood, especially the 'dangerous' dogs. If they are, all you have to do is keep walking and ignore it. It pisses me off that you might be walking the street with your mace and some jackasses from this site told you a doberman is one of the most dangerous breeds.

Any dog larger than yours. My 90lb pit bull would not hurt a flea, well maybe a rat, really he plays with my rat, my little, under 15lbs would attack in a minute. That is why she never goes to the dog park without a leash. Watch for body language, ears up tense wagging of the tail, bearing teeth growling loud barking. Any dog is dangerous unless under complete control. My pit was attack as a puppy by a lab. So watch over your little ones Do not be fooled by size or breed, there was a dog fighting ring broke up here and the breed they were using Chihuahua, showed them on TV they were every bet as vicious as any breed most people think about when it comes to dog fighting. Guy I know who works were they were taken says everyone will have to be put down

There is no Dangerous breeds per say, it is all about the owner and how they raised the dog. I have a pit bull and a rutty they will not hurt a thing I have raised them well and they have been around people all the time as well as other dogs. The one thing a dog hates is to be caged or chained, that will make them mad. Only while walking should you chain them. My dogs only walk with a chain when a lot of people are around. Though they stay right by me.. so don't just look out for some breeds look out for all. It might not even be the other dogs sometimes, sometimes it can be yours....

My answer would be the HUMAN BREED! Yes, you do have to watch all animals, but, most animals, ROTT'S, PITT'S, etc. are only as mean as the owner trains them to be. I have a Rott, Lab, Toy Poodle, and a Westie. At this point my 6 month old Westie is a terror. But seriously no pet is born mean. As a Pet Sitter, I have encountered every breed there is, even Pitt Bull's. Never had a problem, and hopefully never will. The more socialized the pet is, most likely the less aggressive they will be. If you want more info, do the research on different breeds, but again, I think you will find it all depends on the way the owner raises their pet. Hope this helps.

Depends if they are behind a fence / trained/ spayed / newtered/agressive or not or provoked - it all depends on so many factors ....

Dangerous - satistically according to a study done a few years ago - poodles & cocker spaniels are the top biters - but it's not like they kill children or small dogs on site - nips thats it
Watch out for dogs that are of leash or owners have little to no control over ( eg 7 year old walking a a dog larger than half their size ) If you see a dog thats larger than your with large powerfull jaws - just step a bit off the path - till the dog passes - you don't have to walk right next to other's dogs whom your not sure of.

If the other dog is also on a walk while your a few feet off the side walk get your dogs to sit & wait quietly & once the dog passes continue your walk

You should watch for all breeds. If you have a list of five dogs that you believe are "dangerous" you will be less likely to prepare for other aggressive dogs. People could tell you Pit Bulls are dangerous, but then be attacked by a Golden Retriever. You and you children should know not to approach any dog unless given direct permission to from the owner. Knowing the five dangerous breeds is not going to keep you any safer on your walks.

If you are really concerned, carry pepper spray in case you are approached by any aggressive dog.

Why is it that everyone wants to pick on the breed....when in all honesty you need to get on the irresponsible owner. IT IS NOT THE BREED!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have 2 rotties. I was walking my male the other day and he is on a leash, a lady walking with her dog (NOTICE: no BREED mentioned) was not on a leash came running up and bite my dog.....He looked at it and kept walking.....Now what are you gonna do? A rottwieler was attacked should we put the dog that bit him on the "Dangerous Dog" list?
