PLAYSTATION 3!
ok i'm kidding.
as said before me, legos, and also try to introduce your kid to a certain sport early, like a miniature version or something, so they can grow up and make you proud! (and not be nerds :P)

I'm a Family Daycare Provider, with 3 babies under 20 months, and I finally caved in and bought a pretend kitchen set through ebay. It was the best thing I ever did. They would play with it all day if I let them, and I almost have to drag them away from it to paint, paste, etc !
I also use several different sites, that offer some really creative ideas for toddlers.
Foot Tracing
Chalk Fun
Paper Towel Drawing
Toddler Mural
Straw Painting
Paint with Water
Crumple Painting
Indoor Activities
Doll Bed
Sheet Day
Chair Maze
Sticky Fingers
Texture Touch
Kitchen Fun
Letter Sandwiches
Picture Menus
What Is It?
Vegetable Teethers
Apple Smile
Washing Vegetables
Mud Balls
Painted Toast
Marshmallow Treats
Apple Shake-Ups
I hope this helps......happy kids make for happy Mom's !!

At this stage, he loves to put things "in and out". Make a box of containers and things he can put into them, like old tupperware or cottage cheese containers. Fun things to put into the containers like oreos, Cheezits, frozen peas and carrots. Nothing that will choke him (like grapes or cheese squares). Maybe some duplo legos or toys he can't swallow.
Fine motor control is still developing, so finger painting (and coloring, too) will probably be more like fist or palm painting. Large muscle games are lots more fun. He can "help" vacuum and sweep and move chairs for you!
My four sons loved boxes at that age. I got a couple used boxes they could sit in and they played "train" with some funny hats and a wooden train whistle.
I remember one game they loved was to "help" me organize a kitchen cabinet or my pantry. They'd stack the different cans and boxes and really slow me down, but it was a many hours' project for all of us! I do remember cleaning up broken Jello packages, though! Good opportunity for home-made "lickum-aid".

Most of the time children at this age like to be entertained...they love to see and try new things...like...shopping or just window shopping at the mall...going out to lunch is also exciting to them...going to museums expanding their little world...being cold out side is also a wonderful experience for them...you can teach them how to properly dress for the cold weather...during this age it is a wonderful time...to experience all the new and different thing in there world...even going to the market and walking up and down the isles...looking at the different foods is a learning experience.for them...going into a book store and just sitting looking thur the children books is also a leaning experience...this is a time that you should be teaching your child about the world that is surrounding him...make every day a learning experience for them...even if it is just sitting around with a blank sheet of paper...and putting a pencil in their hands and letting them write...scribble is a learning experience...just sitting at a window looking at the cars go by...and talking to your child about what color is that car...that is a leaning experience that you have taught your child...so make every day an learning experience for you child weather you are in the house or going out for the day

Make cookies with him. Let him pour the ingredients into the bowl. Make a tent out of sheets. Find a big cardboard box and make it into a spaceship or a pirate ship. Buy some toy boats and fill up the bathtub.

Encourage him to play with legos, blocks, toy cars, trucks, etc. Have him draw, and like you said finger paint. You can read books together, watch movies, and listen to music. Good luck!

Agree with the Lego idea just buy Mega Blocks(ovesized Legos). Wife and I have twin 14 month old boys and they are fascinated with them. Especially if you build it up and let them tear or knock it down

You could make pretty pictures together. You could do little kiddie puzzles like the ones with animals, and teach your child colors, animals, sounds, numbers with the puzzles. You could watch a movie ( but not too many). You could Go shopping in the toy department. Play dress up. Lots of things I like to do with my son. Try to make it a learning activity. Like, when your finger painting teach her the colors. I like to play cars with my son and his hot wheels. I line them up and count them with him. Then we race them! Hes 2
