Whatever you decide to buy, if your buying new NEVER pay sticker price. Negotiate a minimum of 10% off 20% is possible. Don't get caught up in the 'how much do you want to pay monthly' Focus on the purchase price and the finance rate. It's always possible to get your own financing. (Credit Unions usually have better interest rates) Don't waste your money on extended warranties. 9 times out of 10 the dealers profits (why else would they offer them) Also, get them to throw in Flloor mats, a full tank of gas and some car wash coupons. Since you have 2-3 months go drive what you like narrow down your choices then drive by frequently and see what cars are in for service.
Also, you can play dealers against each other. Take there best offer to another dealer and see if they can beat it.
If your buying used, take the car to a mechanic of your choosing and have the car checked out. Buy private party, dealers charge more. Look for signs of a previous accident. Any repainting, overspray on undercarriage, bondo. Never buy a car with a salvage title (it means the car was purchased from a junkyard and restored) Also, never buy a rental car. They give great deals but think about how abused rentals are. If it seems to good to be true, it is!!! And finally, since you asked my vote is Acura, especiallly if you like Honda because after all Acura is Honda's top of the line, just as Infinity & Lexus are Nissan's and Toyota's. Good-Luck

Isabela has a good answer, Honda and Toyota are the most reliable and dollar-for-dollar the best cars, since you seem to be very conscious of your money, have you considered a hybrid to save gas and cut down on pollution, Honda has a civic hybrid that should be just under 20,000. Check the prices at MSN AUTO. If your looking for something more roomy, Saturn is making the Vue with a type of hybrid. If you want to hold the price down further Hyundai has good reliability and Kia is also made by them, several of my friends have them and no trouble at all, of course the warranty is exceptional. Do not go by yourself, consider one of the buying services like consumer reports, my employer belongs to a service called Buyers Reward that one of the guys saved 6,000 on a truck. Good Luck!

It all depends on what kind of car you want. You can get some new ones for under 20K. So shop around. IF you buy a late model buy a GM car with the 100,000 mile drive train warranty on it's certified used cars....Dave.....

Hyundai has the most features for the $. You can even get a Sonata for that price. BUT, the quality isn't as high as Toyota or Honda. If I were you, I'd go for a Camry or Accord.

Go in the off season. (Fall and Winter)
Go in the middle of the week (definately NOT saturday)
If you go to a car dealership, salesmen are more willing to make a sale under those circumstances.
Check out AutoTrader.Com. The prices are low because the dealerships and sellers are wanting to move them out and off already.
Hope those two helped.
Toyota's are good. Mine's reached 300,000 miles and it's still running pretty decently, and I get really good gas mileage with it. (:
