So, my puppy is 5 and a half months old. He's a pembroke welsh corgi and didn't really bark at all until about a month ago. We live in an apartment, and he does well, except for the random barking. He's quiet at night, and most of the time, except when he hears a random noise (like when someone is talking outside, airplanes, ambulances, car horns, walking upstairs, etc). Are there any ways we can stop him from barking at random things?

Oh yeah, we tried a shock collar for about 2 hours and decided it wasn't for us! So I guess we are lookign for ways that don't involve collars (shock or citronella or sound).

Thanks!

Teach him a noise or word that means that you are displeased with his behavior. Use it for things that he knows he isn't supposed to do, like jumping on the furniture or something like that. This will be a long process, but it will save a lot of yelling later.
Just make the noise when he starts to bark. Most puppies like to please their masters, so he will soon learn 'this makes mommy make the 'no' noise'.
We have two dogs. One is my husband's from before we met, the other we both raised from a puppy. His, Ty, will bark and bark and at the littlest thing, waking up our infant and I have to yell and tell her to 'go lay down'. Our other, Mitzy, will start to bark at a knock or a door bell, but when I make the 'no' noise (a low hum in the back of my throat), she will stop immediately.

The best thing you can do is not yell at him. You yelling is like barking to him, so you're only showing him that barking is okay in that situation.

For my pup, whenever he barked, I would calmly go pick him up and put him in time out somewhere quiet, like the bathroom. He learned really fast that if he wanted to see anything cool, he better be quiet!

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/thedogtrainer

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

Puppies dont bark untill they are comftorable in your home. How would you feel being in someones home and randomly yell at someone across the street infront of someone you dont know? That is how a dog feels. The dog is protecting you now that he knows you love him. That is a way of loving you, not trying to annoy you.

corgis are very ractive as a breed, so it will be tough to make him uncorgilike
but i suggest leaving a leash on him at night and if he barks more than once at anything give it a quick tug, that way he gets that its ok to react just not over react
