If its money that bothers you most ask the artist about a "deal". How much can you afford at a time? Even if its only $100 a sitting and you take a few more sittings than normal. A cheap tattoo is not the best, but the best doesnt have to be expensive. Price shop, but dont go around saying "so and so only quoted me $xxx" It doesnt work like that, get a rough idea of how much its going to be and then see about breaking it up into smaller sessions at whichever shop you feel most comfortable at. Also the sessions depend how fast an artist works, some artists can take 8 hours on a piece that the quickest will take 3. Do not risk your health at an unsafe shop for the sake of a couple of hundred dollars.

Face it - a backpiece is never going to be cheap. The artist may not even be able to tell you in advance how much it will cost overall; there's such a lot of work involved that they honestly may not know precisely how long it will take. It's not uncommon for them to just quote you an hourly rate and a guesstimate of how many hours they think it may take.

I really wouldn't look at any tattoo in terms of price, and this goes ten times more for a backpiece. It's a significant piece of art which will be with you for the rest of your life, so if you're thinking of having one done, then yes, obviously you need to get some idea of the likely cost so you know whether you can afford it or need to save up, but ultimately the choice should be made based on the quality of the artist's work, not their price.

Hope this helps.

do you really want the cheapest price for a tattoo??? I would much rather have a good artist do my work and it cost more rather than a cheap artist. in this case you really do get what you pay for. it also depends on alot of different factors the detail of the work, the time put into the peice, the color please make sure you see some of the artists work, talk to some of his clients make sure they are happy with his work. because it really is giong to be there for the rest of your life.

The cheaper the tattoo is the worse it is going to look and it all really depends on the area too. I got mine done for $80 and it is an EXCELLENT tattoo.. very detailed and it covers my full lower back.. but my uncle also knew the guy that owned the tattoo place.. it normally would have cost like $200 prob.. call around and see what places pricing are.

For something very very simplistic I've heard of people paying around $1500. Price really shouldn't be the issue tho. Avoid any tattoo shop that advertises their LOW LOW PRICES. You don't want to get the 'Geo metro' of tattoos.

if you're going for cheap... just don't do it. i have over 11 hours of work so far and i'm not finished yet. i think i have 9 hours left but that is a conservative estimate. my artist charges by the hour and i am guessing it will cost me over $2000 but it's worth it.

a great well known artist would cost you around a thousand total i'd say maybe/probably more depending on ALOT of other stuff. bear in mind i'm talking about top of the line worldwide known artists.

a cheaper shop or one of your locals you can just drive to after work will cost you much less i'm sure...
