No, God does not make people suffer, we make ourselves suffer. Cancer is in almost all cases caused by something the person has either inhaled, eaten, smoked, or whatever in their life. We may not have even known it was wrong to do it so many years ago, like smoking.
But what is glorious about God is that even though we do these things to ourselves, and suffer because of it, He still reaches down to His children. Sometimes He calms the storm and sometimes He calms His child :)

No, I dont believe that. If suffering made people call on the lord, there wouldnt be so many people turning away from him instead when troubled times hit. The lord does heal, so when bad things happen & you pray for help, he will help you. Having faith strengthens you. He doesnt make it happen though, sometimes life does happen & its just a test you have to overcome.

A better way to put it is: God sometimes lets people go through tough times so they will feel the need to call on Him. A person who is happy and satisfied with life, is not aware of their "spiritual bankruptsy". It is better to discover that NOW than to find out about it after death, when it is too late. Unfortunently many people will not seek after Him until He is "the last resort". It says something about His patience. It doesnt say much for us. As C. S. Lewis puts it (speaking about PAIN) "it is Gods megaphone to reach a deaf world". Sometimes He has to take away all of our toys to make us listen to Him. Or as Lewis says, "He wants to give us something, but He cant, because our hands are full"....theBerean

Not always, to "call" on God is more than mearely praying.
After "calling" on God a life-change occurs. Scripture says that God is faithful and just to forgive our sins if we acknowledge that we are broken and need him and with His help we act to form our lives around the knowledge of what He says is true (Bible)
It also says that if we draw near to God then He will draw near to us.
Great question.
It's a hard answer.
When Adam and Eve ate the forbiden fruite they got the "price tag" with it.
Not a punishment- a consequence, like a price tag.
death, physically and spiritually. With this they experienced acting outside of the way God acts and brought death to the universe which is slowely winding down.
Cancer is- in effect a price tag, a consequence for something they did. As indirect as it seems.
To answer the other side of this question is very hard, many (real) followers of Jesus don't understand it and how can anyone fully understand it. God is in control of everything and predestination and the Soveriegnty of God, that's something that followers of Jesus grapple with and take much study and prayer to understand, even though we won't fully get it I don't believe.
some things are just not comprehensible. The Scripture says that God is not like us.
it also says God does not tempt us but temptation is a result of our own "natural" desires. As an example that death and sickness is a price an indirect consequence.
Scripture also says that some sickness is for the good of followers of Jesus meaning, some trials are made to test us like the testing of armor, you don't know if armor is good and you can't test or- become accustome to it unless it's tested.
Some sickness Scripture says is made to grow us, in various aspects of our lives.
This is all very hard to understand if your not a follower of Jesus like I understand the basics of radio waves but I can't tell you how they exist because I'm not a scientist.
the answer to your question is- not always. Sometimes that is the case Scripture says.
the Scripture supports that, God is a loving God He made us to be with Him, He even died for us to make a way for us to be with Him again after we messed up.
Sorry I can't fully explain it all, no one can. Scripture says that all things revealed are revealed by God.
Subjects like this the answer or contentment come only from God showing you.
Rambo
ps. Satan does not get the glory for sickness. Scripture refutes that. Don't go blaming things on wrong assumptions.
Satan can do nothing without God allowing it, (crazy sounding another God reaveal thing) Scripture says and supports it, the book of Job is a good example.
Satan gets too much credit, I know alot of the time he doesn't need to make me fall I do it on my own.
And the answer below me is totally false too.
Scripture does not support that line of thinking.
God doesn't need to "show you your place"
Only occassionaly does God do such things as shown in Scripture but that's not a general "rule of thumb"
God loves you and values you over everything in the universe.
lol I keep adding the more I see.
Scriptures says that Followers of Jesus can do all things through Him. It also says He will give you the desires of your heart.
Explantation to that verse- if you are a follower of Jesus and have a relationship with God then you will want what He wants, and those will become your desires.
"God's work done God's way will not lack God's supply"

God allows it. He doesn't want us to suffer. But our sins separate us from God. So also we suffer from our sins, environmental sins or others sins. All diseases are rooted in some type of sin. The wages of sin is death. That is why everyone dies physically.
Yes, God allows people to suffer and is there for when they call on Him. Then He many times heals that person, if they call on Him. Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Why does God permit suffering?
Who really is to blame for it?
Humans are to blame for much of the suffering. They fight wars, commit crimes, pollute the environment, often carry on business in a manner motivated by greed rather than concern for their fellowman, and sometimes indulge in habits that they know can be harmful to their health. When they do these things, they hurt others and themselves. Should it be expected that humans would be immune to the consequences of what they do? Is it reasonable to blame God for these things that humans themselves do?
Satan and his demons also share responsibility. The Bible discloses that much suffering is because of the influence of wicked spirits. The suffering for which so many people blame God does not come from him at all.
How did suffering get started? Examination of the causes focuses attention on our first human parents, Adam and Eve. Jehovah God created them perfect and put them in paradise surroundings. If they had obeyed God, they would never have got sick or died. They could have enjoyed perfect human life forever. Suffering was not part of Jehovah’s purpose for mankind. But Jehovah clearly told Adam that continued enjoyment of what He had given them depended on obedience.
Obviously, they had to breathe, eat, drink, and sleep in order to continue living. And they had to keep God’s moral requirements in order to enjoy life fully and to be favored with such life forever. But they chose to go their own way, to set their own standards of good and bad, and thus they turned away from God, the Life-Giver. (Gen. 2:16, 17; 3:1-6) Sin led to death. It was as sinners that Adam and Eve produced children, and they could not pass on to their children what they no longer had. All were born in sin, with inclinations toward wrongdoing, weaknesses that could lead to illness, a sinful inheritance that would eventually result in death. Because everyone on earth today was born in sin, all of us experience suffering in various ways..
Ecclesiastes 9:11 says that “time and unforeseen occurrence” also have a bearing on what happens to us. We may get hurt, not because the Devil directly causes it or because any human does it, but because by chance we are in a place at the wrong moment.
Jesus performed many miracles to demonstrate that he was the Messiah. He even raised the dead. Those works attracted the crowds, but Jesus did not come to earth merely to do a social work. He came to bear witness to the truth. He knew that any material benefits he provided were temporary. Even the resurrected ones would die again. Only by bearing witness to the truth could he help some to gain everlasting life. (Luke 18:28-30) Today, some individuals try to imitate Jesus’ good works by opening hospitals or performing other services among the world’s poor. In some cases, they do this at great personal cost, and their sincerity is commendable; but any relief they supply is temporary at best. Only the Kingdom a Heavenly Government that Jesus talked about when He was on the Earth will bring permanent relief.

That is an affirmative.
God ultimately tries to teach you, your place in this universe.
And that is, you have no right to boast, or to walk around like youve accomplished something great, because no matter what you accomplish, you can never really have the power to do anything of great value, unless HE allows it.
And unless there were things like famine, disease, hunger, and death, humans would never really learn to be humble.

No... God doesn't CAUSE the suffering... Instead God uses the suffering of people as a chance to show them his healing power and mercy.
