I have cubbards in my kitchen that do not go all the way to the ceiling, and ive been wondering for a while what to put up there to fill the gap it leaves. I have about a foot of space to work with, Any ideas?

a lot of people put fake plants, like ivy in areas above cupboards. other people put copper pans, baskets, etc.

whatever you decide to put up there, make sure you like it because it will be a pain to take down if you change your mind.

also remember that whatever goes up there will need to be dusted eventually...so if you do choose ivy, it will be a pain to dust each leaf.

Lucky you!

I have the older "soffit" type in my house. The kind of cabinets that have drywall above them.

Open space can above the kitchen cabinets can really, really be made to look totally good with lighting. If liberal budget, get the flexible "LED" in any color (usually white or gold is the best) and place above the cabinets.

If on budget, use can lights with compact florescent bulbs (saves energy and heat) and place in space. If really on tight budget, got ot goodwill and find something small and hopefully with a flexible head.

A few wicker baskets, fun objects that express a hobby or love of yours will do very well in this area. No need to go "kitchen", that is try and put kitchen decorations in the area. In fact, objects you love personally in the kitchen lends the area a very sophisticated look.

Lower lighted wattage by the way. Low wattage decorating your "negative space" (free space with no real purpose).

If creative, you can play with light and shadows, shine light through perforated objects, shine light on nice framed pictures.

Experiment!

I have the same problem. I bought artificial grape vines and clear Christmas lights. ( small lights) First I cut shelf paper and covered the top of the cupboards to keep the kitchen grease off. Just change the paper periodically and save scrubbing.

I have collected some cute odd baskets.

It looks pretty seeing the vines intertwined with lights at night. During the day the vines look nice.

The baskets are optional. Collectibles would look good to.

I in simple terms offered a house with an analogous kitchen. i've got been putting my glass vases up there for now... surprisingly, the kitchen is substantial yet there quite isn't lots cabinet area. besides, the vases look nice yet now regrettably my cat has desperate to bounce on good of the refrigerator and then on good of the shelves and that i'm worried he's going to knock my vases over. Ah, existence with cats...

Baskets full of loose ends and knick knacks. There are some available from ikea. They look nice when they are all the same all in a row and a great for those things that just don't have a home.

Plants with hanging vines are always nice (fake would probably be best so you don't have to climb up to water them), or else maybe a group of decorative vases/pots? Just remember you're going to have to dust whatever you put up there, so go with the "less is more" philosophy.

Put up some pretty platters and silk ivy. Make it look attractive. You can also get a carpenter to build soffits which will close of the space.

I have the same type of cupboards. Plants really love the indirect light they get up there. I have spider plants, aloe and vines. I just use a kitchen type step ladder to get up there to water and mist them.

I would use Crown Moulding which is readily available at most hardware stores fininished or unfinished. Check Home Depot or Lowes if you have one you go to. They should also be able to help you with instalation pointers.

Nicknacks of course. Decorative pots, art work. You could even put a nice kitchen sink up there.
