I'm guessing here that you're not in the US, where butter is measured in sticks. A stick of butter is 4 ounces, so your brownie recipe needs 12 ounces of butter! Good old Nigella, never one to skimp ......

It means 1 & 1/2 cups. Each stick of butter is wrapped & has a measuring chart on it. 1 stick = 1/2 cup.

Butter comes in sticks ... use 3 of them.
You can not use the tubs of butter 'substitute' ... use real butter that comes in a one pound box. Each box has 4 sticks ... use 3 of them.
