If you haven't had a bird before, then I'd say a cockatiel (even though I'm partial to parrots myself). Cockatiels can learn to say a few words and can be tamed. They do still bite though, and pretty hard as well.

Parrots have a much larger life-span than a cockatiel, so it really is a life-time commitment. Of course if either bird doesn't work out for you, you can give them to a rescue. Definitely do your research, but I have to say that I think you might like a cockatiel better.

Well personally I have 2 African Grey Parrot's. I say parrots because these one's talk and can understand. A Macaw Parrot can't talk as much. But both mimic sounds they hear. If you have time for them, if you just want a bird to sit around make a mess and chirp all day them I quess the cockatiel is for you. Parrots can be your loyal friend, can solve puzzles and much more. In Phenox,AR they have taught parrots to count, remember colors and even tell the difference from same and different objects. So again are you a teacher or a watcher good day :) By the way you can teach the parrot not to bite by not showing any emotion when they do bite. Turn your finger to get them off balance or you can even put them in a birdy time out. If you show the parrot that it gets a reaction from you when they bite, they might thinks it's a game. Never hit a bird of course.!

I would recommend buying a cockatiel as a starter bird. Cockatiels are not as high-maintenance as parrots tend to be. Cockatiels are also cheaper. With parrots, you have to buy a big cage, and such. Cockatiels are also not as loud or obnoxious as parrots. Cockatiels are also extremely smart, and easy to love. They become very attached to their owner, yet they do not require the constant attention that parrots do. As for the biting part, my dad get bit by a cockatiel, and he had to pry its beak open to get his finger out. It was gross. But that was a "wild" (un-tame) cockatiel, and I am guessing you would be smart enough to get a tame one for a family pet... Anyways, all in all, I think that a cockatiel would work as a better starter bird.

Hey, cockateils can bite really hard, don't kid yourself! A teil is much easier to care for than a larger parrot, though. I have an african grey. These complex, high-strung birds are prone to feather picking disorders if they become stressed - stress can mean vitually anything including but not limited to the fact that the owner isn't around as much as he or she needs to be. It's a fulltime job: like taking care of a toddler.

I'd say a cockteil because they've got a good personailty, and they are smart and easy to tame.
Also with there head feathers you can tell if they are scared or relaxxed.
I also think that teils are better than parrots because most parrots squawk. My cockatiels sing.

cockatiels are parrots. they are cousins of the cockatoos. cockatiels make good starter parrots, if you've never dealt with parrots before. do a bunch of research before getting any pet, you don't want to do anything stupid and kill the poor animal.

cockateils do not bite as hard. also they are not as needy as large parrots and easier to take care of. they are a good bird for beginners. Of course they still need interaction with you, need proper diet ect. Parrots however if they don't get the attention they need become destructive and neurotic. they can scream which you and your neighbors will hate, and they can mutilate themselves. Large parrots are a ton of work.
