Hi!

My BF gave me a ring 2 years ago - I have worn it everyday for the last 2 years -- then all of a sudden (around the time I stopped eating meat) I got a red itchy mark under the band of the ring - covering about a 1/2 inch width of my finger. I took the ring off to let it heal -- the mark almost went away and I put the ring on for one day and the mark is back -- it is very red and itchy -- it actually looks like a burn - it is itchy - but only when the ring is on - I now have the ring on the other hand - but there hasn’t been a problem -- does anyone know what this is - or have experienced this before?

the ring is white gold.

No....I think that you got a fungus under the ring. Treat the skin for the fungus and once it clears completely up, you shouldn't have any more problems with it.

Never heard of an allergy to 14K gold...but I suppose it can happen. A more common allergy is to nickel products. If you're truly not sure...an easy way to tell is to tape a real nickel (the coin) to the top of that finger. If the same thing happens...and it could happen pretty quickly....that ring isn't white gold as you thought but is either nickel or has nickel in it.

Some people are allergic to certain types of metal. It could be that the white gold is just a plating and that there is a different metal on the inside. After two years, it could have worn enough to allow the metal inside to come in contact with your skin, thereby causing the rash.

I don't think you can be allergic to gold. It probably is something like hand lotion or some other chemical that is caught between your finger and the ring.

Sounds like what happens when I wear fake jewelry. You know the kind made out of nickel and then plated with gold. I would have the ring appraised, and if it is fake, I recommend the pout method when you next see him. :)
