All domestic cats are born with the purring ability. purring involves activation of nerves within the voice box. These nerve signals cause vibration of the vocal cords while the diaphragm serves as a piston pump, pushing air in and out of the vibrating cords, and creating a musical hum.
Kittens learn how to purr when they are a couple of days old, this purring tells ‘Moma cat’ that “I am okay” and that “I am here.” It also indicates a bonding mechanism between kitten and mother.
As the kitten grows into adulthood, purring continues. Many suggest a cat purrs from contentment and pleasure. But a cat also purrs when it is injured and in pain.

A purring cat is not always a happy cat. A cat in pain, distress or even giving birth will purr. Cats that are in pain will purr when approached by people; suggesting that cats purr to show that they are friendly and approachable, ready to be stroked or helped.
At two to three days old a kitten will start to purr, the purr is very quiet and can be difficult for a human to hear. As the kitten grows the purr gets louder. A kitten purring is a signal to the mother that all is well and the kitten is contented and getting enough food when suckling.
To purr, cats use extra tissue in the larynx (voice box). This tiuue vibrates when they purr.

My cats purred when they're happy or sleeping. Especially if the get a lot of attention. My smaller cat purred so much her's sounded like a broke player for a while. It was funny. A cat purring is a blessing of a Happy Cat!

kittens purr for a number of reasons but the MEANING is soothing
they purr when they nurse to assure the mother that they are recieving milk, they purr when they snuggle to assure you or a littermate that they approve of the situation
they purr when they are extremely frightened or injured/sick as a way to self sooth and keep thier blood pumping
purring is actually a vibration of the arteries leading to the heart and lungs, and some kittens nose runs when they purr, because the vibrations stimulate the sinuses

I think the actual physical ability to purr is still a mystery to scientists. But any cat lover will tell you it's the sweetest sound in the world. Purr=Happy, content, loved, satisfied
P.S. Not just kittens purr, old cats do too!
