well,i have noticed that some ppl make up their own impression of islam and the women covering.i have a really good metephore:

when a vegetable seller is selling vegetables,he allows people to feel, see, touch and use all those sences to see how beautiful and ripe they are.

the muslim women who cover(it is optional) are like diamonds.so beautiful that one wants to cover them up,so no one will see them or feel them....they cover up for protection.

i want ppl who r reading this to tell me wat they think...thank you

I really don't know enough about Islam to have an opinion, but if women want to cover up then they should. But women shouldn't be forced to do so.

Actually, I guess that was an opinion......

I am not a muslim and I am not passing judgement on what you believe but you asked and my opinion is:
1. Someone covering you up to conceal your beauty implies several things including ownership, you are a man's property and he wants to protect you from something
2. You cannot protect yourself
3. Beauty needs protection. No reasoning in that. If something is beautiful you show it off not conceal it. how many times have you aced a test and concealed your test score from everyone? Does not make sense.
4. Adults should not be patronized that way

Diamonds don't get less beautiful by being looked at.

You don't shatter a diamond because it's been looked at.

The human body is a beautiful thing, and knowing and loving your own body is even more beautiful.

Why not share what is beautiful with the world?

I'm not saying walk around naked, but that's what I can't understand with more puritanical peoples... Outside of protecting yourself, I can't understand why.

It's a nice metaphor, but I remember a Islamic politician on the news a few months ago comparing women to raw meat and men to cats with no self-control. That wasn't all that nice of a metaphor.

What a load of rubbish.

Maybe the vegetables are being covered up because they're rotten and the vendors don't want to scare off their customers.

I think that in many countries like Saudi Arabia it is not optional at all. When Islam writes the law, it it a horrible place to live.

Have you ever bought a diamond so that no one will see it? Neither have I.

Also, it's not optional for women to veil up in Saudi Arabia and quite a few other places.

I think it's pretty wise. It's definitely less dangerous, since beauty indeed does attract crime. I don't see this relating to Islam, though. Could you explain why it is particicularly more used by muslims?

Yes...I cover my "diamonds" too... (that really didn't come across right), but in general I would not allow anyone to disrespect me, I am NOT vegetables.

Well okay, but what about me? You can see by my avatar how beautiful I am. I do not cover myself, yet if anyone wants to cover themselves that is their right.
So to answer your question, you are correct.
