It's a hard slog, but mental toughness will take you places physical fitness won't. Good luck.

If I was given the opportunity to walk part of it, I would definitely do it. I am not physically fit enough to do the entire track, due to an acquired disability, it would take me over a week just one way. A friend's had a relative who went there on the Kokoda challenge and they had a heart attack and died, I think they went on it because of a family member had died there during the war, and they were doing it in honor of them. The record is 16 1/2 hours one way, Brenden Buka who did not stop except for the check points.

If you consider yourself pretty fit then you will be able to do it. My boss went last year ( sweet justice, while he was trekking the jungle I was relaxing on a beach in Thailand!!haha). He is in his fifties and has a pot belly and drinks way too much, some of his mates went as well and they all prepared by going for a few long walks prior to the trip.
On the trek I think you have to get up fairly early, trek through mud, up hills, down hills, fight the foliage etc for at least 8 hours a day. But if you are fit and healthy then you will not have a problem.
I have heard though that they dont recommend going if you have heart troubles etc as if something happened it would take too long for paramedics to arrive because the region is so inaccessable. ( that spelling doesn;t look right, sorry - too hard to get to!! haha )
Good luck!!

well, they showed a thing on tv not long ago where a group of heart surgery patients made the trek (with their doctors coming too, just in case). it was pretty emotional, and it looked like a pretty hard slog. but they were so proud at the end of it!
i would say that it would be a pretty hard trek to do. i think you would need to a high level of fitness - as well as the emotional stamina and dedication to doing this. if you are already fairly fit - maybe just work more on stamina and endurance if you are thinking of doing the trek.

You'll need to be in fairly good physical condition, but by the same token 6 open heart surgery patients recently completed the trek, but with medical supervision. It is not a walk in the park, but with persistance and a bit of physical traing you should make it OK.

It depends on how much you want to do. If you only wish to do part of the track then average physical condition will be fine. If you want to complete the entire track, and enjoy it, then I recommend you start doing some hard training.
