He said, "Surely they are my people, sons who will not be false to me"; and so he became their Savior. In all their distress he too was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old. Yet they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he turned and became their enemy and he himself fought against them." Isaiah 63:8-10

Include verse 11 and you have to whole pattern, seen over and over in Scripture. "Then his people recalled the days of old, the days of Moses and his people— where is he who brought them through the sea, with the shepherd of his flock"

It is an endless cycle, not just in scripture, but in history.

The people are in trouble
God moves
He saves his people
They worship him for a time because of it
Eventual they forget and fall away
They fall back in trouble - sometimes even brought on by God Himself to wake them up
The people are in trouble
God moves...
(repeat endlessly)

Isa 63:8 For he said, Surely they [are] my people, children [that] will not lie: so he was their Saviour.

Jesus is Israels saviour. Self explained

Isa 63:9 In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.

He led the out of egypt, he felt there pain and they felt it.

Isa 63:10 But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, [and] he fought against them.

the rebelled and did not keep is commands and he turned against them.

It's simple.

It is in accord with much of Scripture. Almighty YHVH has tried so hard to bless us and save us, and we with few exceptions have turned our back on His love! His name is blasphemed among the heathen because of those who say they worship Him (but don't). The Almighty YHVH created this world very good. Once man sinned, he could no longer meet the requirements of YHVH. Because of His great love for man, He sent His son the Savior. The Savior's name means YHVH is my Savior!--YAHOSHUA! The only way one can have his sins taken care of is to invite the Savior in to carry them. If a person chooses to remain attached to their sins, they will be consumed in the cleansing fire the Almighty will send to cleanse this world so He can make it new! How could the Almighty be more generous?

It is an OT Scripture that refers to the fact that Israel continued to stray away from God even though he redeemed them from the hand of their enemies over and over....it broke the heart of God...until finally He punished them.

Today it applies to God's people...those who follow Jesus...and if we go astray God will chasten us as a Father disciplines his children...but He will not utterly forsake us..

I believe that in order to save you from eternal hell the Lord may even have to fight against you to do so, but he loves you so much that he will do even that if that is what it takes to save your soul.

It's the old Jewish male leaders efforts to control their people thru threats, guilt and fear. Typical of religious fundamentalism intentions and they have not subsided even into the New Testament, which was written mostly by Paul, another old Jewish leader who tried to control people thru threats, guilt and fear, and he called it Christianity.
