My friend has 2 dogs and she asked me if I thought she should get another. Then she described to me that her current dogs were replacements for 2 older dogs she had that died. She says her current dogs aren't like her previous ones and she isn't enjoying them. She wants to try to find another dog that will be like her first one. I think this is not right-you have to take them as they are. Do you agree or not and if you do,can you suggest a tactful way to tell her this?

She did get the same breed/type-but these dogs personality is different and she won't accept them as they are. Everyone seems to agree that she shouldn't get another until she gets past wanting carbon copies,so I guess I'll figure some way to tell her. She really is a nice lady, just no experience with pets prior to the old dogs.

No. People fail to realize that owning a dog is for a lifetime: the life time of the dog. Your friend seems to be very cold and callious to think she can get another dog like her last one. All dogs (including cloned ones) have different personalities, just like people. I feel sorry for the two she has already. Don't be tactful with her. Explain it like it is. Perhaps she should try doing various things with the two she already has. Agility training or even obedience training classes would get them all out of the house and together doing something constructive. All dogs have their favority things to do and she has to be willing to find out what those are and then do them with the dogs. Trust me, the dogs will become better pets for her if she's willing to go half of the way.

If she isn't enjoying the dogs the dogs probably aren't enjoying her. Did she get the same type of dog that she had before...if not she probably doesn't have a dog suited to her lifestyle. That being said she should not get another dog and IF she was to get a different dog she should lots of research about different breeds and find one that would suit her best (exercising habits, yard size, house/apartment, time spent alone, etc.) And she should also find better homes for the dogs that she already has because those dogs are as unhappy with her as she is with them.
Maybe you could suggest that she only have one dog to devote her time to.

You should never try to get a dog to replace one that died. My friend had a lab and a jack russel when she was younger. She said these dogs were the best dogs in the world, and she wanted dogs that were exactly like them. So now she is 22 and got a lab and a jack russel. They are both TOTALLY different than the dogs she had as a kid. She was disappointed, but she loves them in their own way. Now she knows you can't 'replace' a dog. She got two more dogs, a pit bull and a chihuahua. They are totally different than any other dog she has had. She loves them to death, she couldn't be happier with them.

I think you should talk to your friend, and explain that her previous dogs were very special, and CAN'T be replaced. Before she gets another dog, she has to accept the fact that it IS going to be Different. But these differences make them special in their own way. I think she should learn to love her two dogs that she has now before getting another one.

Though most breeds share similar or typical behaviour, they will not be alike. Any new dog she gets will also not be the same as her previous dogs because she is different now too. her previous dogs were products of a younger , different person. now she is a different age than before and her personality will show this , therefore it will develop dogs differently..an owners attitude/personality has a lot of influence on a companion animal

No that is not right. You should not expect your new dog to be like the one you lost. If she does not love her dogs that she has now she should not get another one. She should find a good home for them and no more dogs with that attitude she does not deserve one.

If she has the money to support them, and a home large enough for them they will be fine. Dogs are pack animals that actually Do often enjoy having other dogs to interact with. If she can care for them than she should have them.

If she gets another dog while she is not happy with those two she is only going to create jealousy among her pack. So for that reason no I do not think she should get another dog

I dont think she should if the only reason is that she is trying to get a dog that acts like her last one.. Dogs are like kids no two are ever alike
